Now that I think back on it, this is probably the equation we spent a whole day arguing about in class when I was in college. That was a loooong time ago and my memory is full of Swiss cheese now.
Can you solve 8÷2(2+2)?

So... I guess you and Dave and I will have no choice but to fight to the death with swords in the morning. I'm going to rest up for the battle now. The blood is on your hands @Chinatown

One thing is for sure... If mathematicians and physicists truly disagree about this, then its no wonder spaceships blow up... Satellites crash into the atmosphere, and self driving cars can't see semi trailers!!!
MartinFromBC, speedyk and lilillill Thank this. -
I actually thought about going back to software development. Less chance of going to prison. -
so if a plane is on a treadmill..

Ok just cause this is a trucking forum...
Little Johnny is an O/O, he parks his truck at a construction company. One day the construction company owner, Jim, asks Johnny if he will go pick up 2 separate trailers from a job site and bring them back to the construction company. If johnny will do this, Jim will pay $8. The job site is 2 miles away. Johnny is not a dummy, he wants to know what the rate is for all miles traveled.
a = Jim's offer
b = number of loads
z = average empty miles per load
y = average loaded miles per load
x = rate per mile for all miles
a÷b(z+y)=x
When we input the information from the word problem the equation reads
8÷2(2+2)=x
This formula can be used for ANY offer and ANY number of miles... And the rate will always calculate correct if the propper order of operations... Or algebra is applied.
This shows that the 2 outside the parentheses cannot be separated from what is inside the parentheses.
