The number in the bracket is not an exponent.
Writing 2(4) is the same thing as writing "2 times 4". It's not 2x2x2x2 or 2^4.
Can you solve 8÷2(2+2)?

2. Exponents (of which there are none in that equation)
3. Multiplication AND division left to right.
4. Addition AND subtraction in the order they appear.

Input the equation into a scientific calculator and see what it says. Or input 8/2*4 ...the answer will be 16.krupa530 Thanks this. -
@Chinatown
The correct answer is 1... I didnt even read the article or any of the posts... Just replied.
Order of operations for All mathematical equations is PEMDAS
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiply &
Divide
Add &
Subtract
(2 + 2) = 4... Parentheses
2(4) = 8... Also Parentheses
8 ÷ 8 = 1... Divide
You can also multiply the 2 before the parentheses into BOTH 2s inside the parentheses thus changing 2(2+2) to (4+4)... So the equation would now read 8÷(4+4)... Which equals 1. Notice that either way you come up with the same answer, this is a way to double check if the equation has been computed correctly.
Trust me I wanted to get my masters in mathematics... But life intervened.Last edited: Aug 3, 2019

I was in trig in 10th grade. Took my GED. Passed the entrance exam to Northern Arizona University with flying colors at 16.
Had the biggest mother ####er math professor in the history of the world. Multiplication goes first. When I'm dying from Alzheimer's or Dementia I'll remember the math theory last, even when all else is lost.G13Tomcat and FlaSwampRat Thank this.
