I keep reading that a backup paper log is required in the event of an elog system failure. I'm not having much luck with finding any regulations stating that they are required or not here in Canada. My supervisor doesn't seem to think we need to keep a paper log in the truck but he won't be the one getting the ticket.

I’m not Canadian. But can certainly answer your question.

Keep a logbook on the truck. Simple as that. You may never use it. But, if your elog fails. How are you going to log your hours if you don’t have one?

You could use a notebook. But why? Truthfully it only cost a couple of dollars. And it’s only a one time expense hopefully. So why not?

Any of the truck stops around Edmonton, or at Grassland. Probably even the Petro-Pass in Ft. Mac.

Probably be easier for me to just go and buy one. Is it actually a requirement in Canada to have a paper logbook when running elogs?

    You're right, he's wrong; here's the rule.

Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations (SOR/2005-313)

83 Use of Electronic Recording Devices
A driver may use an electronic recording device for recording their duty status if

    (h) the motor carrier provides blank daily log forms in the commercial vehicle for the driver’s use.

The easy way to remember is you ALWAYS have to be able to produce proof regarding your work status. If the eLog is dead, how else can you log?

I think I found the problem. Subparagraph (h), as posted above, is missing from the published version of NSC Standard 9 as is available on the CCMTA website. The version I posted is from the federal Department of Justice website and is the official consolidation of the Act. That is one reason why I always try to go to the source.

ETA: I have sent an email to the CCMTA asking for correction or clarification.

Think about it. If we did not require a logbook as backup then we'd all be running a broken ELOG:D

My Elog stopped working this trip to the US, the screen stopped working. Having a real joy on these paper logs ;)
