My brother got a dedicated route to Canada before the internet was available in trucks. He wanted to find out if they dial 9-1-1 to get emergency help or if they use a different number. When I asked around I heard "why even go to a different country if you aren't going to learn about it first!". Some people have waited a long time to finally be on the answer side of not knowing. Brush it off. You ARE being responsible by asking. Canadians will shame Americans for assuming their ways are like America's ways. AND shame Americans for asking if their ways are different from ours. It's mostly an eastern Canada types (like our New York/New Jersey) feature. Western Canadians are easy & friendly. I'd say they are American, as a compliment, but some would hear it as the worst insult so I won't.
