Budgeting. Saving for rainy days. Paying your bills and accounts in a timely fashion. Maintaining a good credit rating.
Not driving the crap out of your truck, properly maintaining it. Don't turn down any work other than if it conflicts with the hours of service or previously arranged time off.semi retired semi driver Thanks this. -

Many factors.
When your expenses exceed your profits, its like being on a sinking ship. You have two choices. Abandon ship, or plug the hole.
Trucking is not cheap. Some will go in debt and finance EVERYTHING and then when combined with maintenance/repairs can not turn a profit.
I read where many guys go out and buy a truck and have trouble finding work for it. Thats what I like to call putting the cart before the horse. If you find the work and then by the equipment for that work. Thats a smart business model.
Then there are guys who just cant keep that left door closed. They stop and like to BS at truck stops or check out the scenery along the way. Take 4 days to do a 600 mi run. Burn both tanks down to empty doing it. Then wonder why they cant break even.

There is a multitude of reasons why some make it and some don't
1) Once you get your own truck some people think they can take weeks off at a time.Usually you have to work just as hard or harder til you get established.
2) Jumping in way before they know the business.Getting your license and working for 6months doesn't qualify you to be a success in this business.
3) Buying a truck is a big investment. If you buy a truck and then break down a week later do you have the money in reserve to take a $1000+ hit.
4) You get involved with the wrong carrier or get your authority and get screwed over.Maybe not your fault but puts you out of business regardless
5) S&*t happens.Sometimes you can do everything right and still fail.
There's lots of other reasons.Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't -
why do we have 10 drivers all make the same money
one driver just declared bankruptcy
one has a 20 acre farm all paid for
one drives a $600/month pu
while I drive a 94 mercedes
i could rent a new car for the 6-7 days a month if i wanted too -
keep in mind that some of us who are making it now have had our share of spectacular failures too.
rollin coal, dca, Ok big boy and 8 others Thank this.
