So I had to drive a truck recently that I don't normally drive. Today I went to uncouple the truck from a trailer that has a load on it for me for tomorrow. I can't get the release lever on the 5th wheel to unlock. I tried all the normal lowering and raising the landing gear and bumping the truck forward and backwards to relieve the pressure on the kingpin and I still got nothing as a result. I have to take that load somewhere tomorrow morning and if I don't get to switch the trucks im screwed on a good running truck....Any tips that may work?

I'm not going into much detail. This has been an ongoing problem with our new trailers for me.
Before doing anything else. Step out and push the handle in. YES I know it's in the locked position. Then apply backward pressure. Release... This has worked best for me.
Other than that, slam the hell out of it several times.
You might try turning the truck slightly left or right.davetiow Thanks this. -

Yeah im in a dirt lot too so I know being on un-level ground there might be a bind in the kingpin too. So maybe I should pull up a few feet as well?

see if the handle doesnt have to be lifted up about 1/2 inch in the slot where it comes through the fithwheel some have a stop welded on them to keep them from coming out.

My current truck can be difficult to release as well.
I have to pull up on the handle a bit to get it to lock open.
You know, it could simply be worn out.
If it won't release with any of the suggestions put forth so far - then call it in and have some service done. -
Probably not a solution to your situation but:
A lot of our trailers creep forward when you set the tandem brakes. I have found that if you set both brakes at the same time it sometimes binds up the 5th wheel release lever.
Setting the tandem brakes and waiting for the trailer to settle. Then set the cab brakes seems to help.

or walk around to the pass. side of 5th wheel and look for what looks like a bolt head and hit it with a hammer then walk back around and make sure handle is out.that worked for me before.
