Another joy of trucking to contend with. One no body mentioned in school, right? And one you never thought about either. How do you sleep in the sleeper while bouncing down the highway at 60-70 mph? Erratic sleep is part of trucking. Don't take my word for it, just look at all the 40 year old drivers out there that look like they're 60. Years of erratic sleep, too much coffee, poor eating habits, big time stress etc. I read where the life expentency of a trucker is around 62. Wonder why? Anyway, be careful getting behind the wheel with minimal sleep. Might end up like The Griswolds in that "National lampoon flick, Vacation".

I know I and everyone out there is compromised when fatigued. I've never nodded off that I have noticed, but I saw a show that talked about micro sleep episodes & it showed a tired subject falling asleep hundreds of times an hour, just for a long blink of an eye. I've taken to stopping more often, walking around, being better hydrated, etc. If I'm really afraid im gonna fall asleep I'll stop. Like you said, they aint paying me enough to risk a hair on my rear end.

I have one question before I answer with my thought.
Do you go right into the sleeper after driving?
If so, try sitting up front in the passenger seat for a bit just talking to your teammate, or just listening to the road noises and radio...get your senses out of "driving mode" and into "relax mode"...perhaps a smoother transition into the sleeper will help.
That is what I did when I was training, it seemed to work...but a good movie in the bunk was always good too!
Don't forget to get out of sight if you cross a scale...you don't want to be in the second seat if you get stopped, since that is "on duty not driving" line 4...really tends to mess with the log book!JustSonny Thanks this. -

Hey Ya'll, I wanted to report back and let ya know how it went. I did just about everything suggested here and added a couple of items. I got one of those weighted jump ropes which I hit for 5 minutes every time we stop. Doesn't sound like much time but that weighted rope gives you a pretty good workout. Its small and effective for my purpose. I do get a few odd looks at the pumps, but I don't care. (If you see a guy in a PAM truck with an orange jumprope hopping around instead of cleaning his windows, that's me)
I also eat a good sized meal right before bed, nothing spicy, but enough to fill me up. I got a container of those disposable earplugs and used them. They don't silence all the noise but they do lessen the distracting ones to a point I can fall asleep. The after dinner coma hits me about 30-45 minutes after I eat while I'm sitting up front in the passenger seat, then i'm off to lala land. I've found too that if I hang with my co for a bit and remind him to take it easy in traffic and drive a little mellower I can sleep better. Better sleep for me means better sleep for him when its his turn and we're all a little safer out there. Thanks again for the suggestions. -
