Though I do realize there have been posts regarding Marten Transport in the past, I don't think there's much regarding them that's current. With what's written of many companies, it's hard to know who brought on their own bad experience and what part the company plays. I've heard an awful lot of trashing some companies, though I'm sure there are some that deserve it.

Besides the dreaded per diem, is it possible to have a halfway decent experience with them?

I have two friends, a husband and wife team who have driven with them for close to 10 years, and they swear by them. They have a dedicated run from Mondovi Minnesota to Memphis, and then from Memphis back to Mondovi. They havent told me anything bad, but they also havent hit on any particulars that are good. Overall they seem happy

It's helpful in so many ways. That's all that needs to be said.

I have to agree with Milkman... this is vague, vague, vague...

Though I'm sure your opinion might be justified in your eyes, when you don't explain, you've not given the inquirer anything to form his/her own opinion... such as something that would provoke a "da#@, I don't want to deal with that kind of s@&#!"

What is your beef with them? Does it come from personal experience?... a consistent enough complaint from the masses?

Didn't Marten, at one time or another, haul products for McDonalds?

Is their per diem mandatory or voluntary? Hopefully it is voluntary.

Justification is I worked there for 3 months. All the time I spent sitting at docks the bad mouthing of the drivers by fleet managers. They try to say that detention is automatic that's a lie. They will only pay you the hours you lost on your logs. Not the total time there which can be upwards to 13+ hrs at a customer. The per diem is mandatory as well. The terminal shops are Slow. Getting breakdown to fix a issue is a act of congress. That reefer goes out tho they have someone there to fix that ASAP. I spent countless days in the shop for their sorry maintained APU. The truck will not idle at all. They have it rigged up so well that it will shut off no matter anything you try. They will not give you a hotel room if your Apu breaks and it's 75 or lower outside. This was my experience at Marten others may be different. This just only scratches the surface of the bad experience I had there.

Edit, you are also paid short dispatch miles not practical . The in can scanner they use to their advantage they want you to scan in the bills at the shipper and after being unloaded. You can only scan in one at a time. Getting it to scan right is a chore in itself as well.

Hometime: they don't believe in quality hometime. It's standard for the industry one day for every week. 4 days maximum or turn in your truck if you want longer hometime. I was asked multiple times to just do a 34 at home after being gone out for well over a month.

I work for marten and while it has not always been puppies and rainbows; i feel the need to address this "detention pay scam" reading is a fundamental skill that few possess these days.
Also common sense is obviously lacking as well.
    1) Marten clearly states the detention policy and the fine print. It is clearly posted all over every terminal , and all over the QC messages .. once a week they give you some new policy to read. most simply don't bother
    2) how many companies pay you to sleep ?? ( before the flame war begins i know there are a few.. Marten is not one of them and they are clear about it)
the policy is simply stated " will pay dentition 2 hours after scheduled appointment time ( if the appt time on the qc is wrong they still pay you from that time) , your remaining drive time 11/14 (whichever you are closer on running out of usually your 14) for up to 9 hours." if you are there longer and talk to your dispatcher as if they were human usually they will pay you extra, or lay over or compensate you in some way ( in my experience )
all you have to do is : show up on time (early is best ), communicate with your FM via QC send in macros often and correctly, keep him updated as to whats going on and then make sure you fill out a reason for detention other than 'slow load/unload.
