I wonder if the 3 dead motorcyclists spoke pig Latin or could play piano by ear? I wonder if they could have learned? Well, since they are dead, the answer is no.

Traffic signs do share a universal design in shape and colour, however signs such as “Wrong Way” , or “One Way” will read specifically that way in North America, so reading the national language is kinda important

No it isn't, certainly not to learn the important words and phrases, important to you as a driver of course which is how we learned our way around Europe. I assume most of the Quebecois knew English, even if they might refuse to speak it, they are very conscious of the defence of their language, as opposed to English. Here in France I have only known 2 of them, both were surly and unfriendly towards me, knowing I am English, while the French people I know (which is most people I know these days) treat me as a local now. They have never remarked about my accent but they mercilessly mocked the lone Quebecois in our village for his when he had to take over reading the numbers at a Lotto event.

But a word of advice to anyone needing to learn a foreign language, do it NOW while you are young and receptive (if you still are ;-)). Due to advancing age my command of French, both speaking and understanding, is worse than it was over 20 years ago. I even struggle with English now but have had a longer time to embed that. 24 years ago I started working, driving internationally for a firm just up the road. All my instructions for reloads and deliveries etc. came by telephone in the cab and, although it was a standing joke in the office my always asking for addresses to be spelled, I never made a mistake that was entirely my fault. Now, I struggle to remember the right words in the middle of a sentence, in both languages, but particularly French. That's why I prefer my conversations to be here at the keyboard. You wouldn't believe how long it takes me to write a message like this. :biggrin_1square7:

Yall are focused on the fact of him not speaking English. The bigger issue in my mind is the drinking and driving. That's what got those 3 people killed.

Having read the entirety of the green book multiple times I'm certainly aware that cdl regs specify that.

However, as someone was pointing out, is the kind of person that drives wrong way down a roadway while drunk the kind of person that knowing another language would REALLY make an impact on?

I not saying you are wrong at all. But you need to enlarge your sight picture. This driver's primary means of communication is his Rwandan language. That means as far as cultural assimilation into the US, he is at best akin to "fresh off the boat". Having deployed 3 times to East Africa and seeing that the locals chewed khat to get stoned. Don't believe Wikipedia either about it being mild. I've personally had to muzzle jab a local when they refused to clear the street for convoy and you'll never forget that look they carry when stoned. I'd like to see toxicology and immigration reports of the driver and I also want to know what his company was so I can avoid those trucks.

The bigger issue is the system failed yet again and those 3 bikers where killed because the current system allowed this driver to come to this country and get a job that he was not trained well enough to do, nor had the experience in his new country to understand he was making the wrong choices and was probably employed by a low rent company for a fraction of the salary that a well trained professional would receive. The part that chaps my hide the most is I wager that not one soul on this thread will pick up the phone or draft one email to ask someone to address these issues. Sure the #####ing and moaning will be spectacular. But when are the decent law abiding professionals gonna do something...anything?

So again I ask to all reading this...
    When is enough, enough?

This is not a personal attack towards you bryan21384, just a rant. Nobody gives a round #### that this happens on an all to frequent basis, because it doesn't affect them directly.
