Hey guys, before i get tagged, I have searched and got a few answers but they are a bit old. I am a company driver right now and plan on going o/o. I live in WA state and drive to CA, AZ, TX, and OK. It is dry, some reefer. I plan on getting a newer truck next year around march. I can go 2 ways...i can either get an 07 and spend 15k on a filter.
Or, since I am gonna be going to CA anyways I should get one equipped with DPF. I figure rates will probably go up come jan 2014 and I don't want to be in a shop waiting to get a filter put it and miss out on some prime time rates. I don't have the money to buy a newer one with the SCR technology. I want to get a T660.
My question is, would an 2009 be better than a 2008? After looking around, all of them have issues but 2009 would be a better bet than 2008 based on the SOME of the MAJOR kinks worked out. Is this statement true?
Also, I read that the DPF drastically decrease the engine life. Generally speaking, I know that there are many variables, what do you think the life expectancy is?
I plan on getting 09 with around 500-550k
thanks guys

what I have noticed with them, the more you idle this stuff, the bigger your issues will be.

Who told you the RATES were going up in Jan. 2014 ? I think you have the SURCHARGES confused with rates. -
well i was thinking that if 100 trucks from wa go to ca now, come jan 2014 only a percentage of those 100 have dpf's then demand goes up...right?

dont spend the money to be compliant until it is absolutely necessary... my truck is a 2000, i go to california now, and will up until the day they turn me away at the border. there are too many unknowns to go out and drop some serious money on some crap that will lower the reliability of your truck, and cost you money. for one, they keep changing ALL compliance dates. also, technology changes, so you are under the impression that its gonna run you $15K to retrofit.... do your homework, there are systems out there for $3K if you look... but who's to say that in december 2013 that they wont push dates back to 2016???

I struggle to make it to Cali now. I have an 06 emissions engine. Why would I worry about things until the day (month) I know it's gonna be a real issue.
harmin5288 and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
As long as you dont idle you will be fine now if your up in the high desert or in indio where it gets to be 110 then ya got to watch out for the carb cops who love to run around and if you dont have the little sticker on your hood you get an award.. you will find them with CHP right there with them just in case...
Mommas_money_maker and harmin5288 Thank this. -
