I plan on changing careers and becoming a truck driver. I'm hoping to find a company like USA or some other that will help out with training. I have a full time job in retail, but my pay is going down, not up. I've been through hour cuts, pay decreases.... I'm done with that, or I would like to be. I want to be an over the road truck driver. it seems really perfect for my personality type. Plus, my family is so spread out, I'm alone all the time anyway. I'm used to it. I really don't think it will bother me to be alone in a truck for extended periods of time or even several days. However, my question is how easy are trucking jobs to come by?. I mean, once a company like USA Trucking pays for your school, is there a chance that they will decide not to use you? (providing you pass) The company I currently work for doesn't like to give out several weeks of vaca at a time. I really didn't want to go to school and then quit. I was planning on just quitting outright once I get accepted into a program and using the Vaca I have saved up to support myself while I'm in school and during training. Is my plan sound? Or is getting a job more difficult than I'm expecting?

Getting a trucking job is easy, don't worry about that. Start now studying for the endorsements; "CDL Practice Tests" at top of this page. Get a passport for Canada runs & TWIC for entry into seaports, chemical plants and military bases. A few of the best company sponsored training is with Prime Inc. or Central Refrigerated. FFE, Stevens, Swift also have good training. What is your location? Put it on your profile so more people can help you get started. Need location to know which hiring area you're in.

Prime is down in Springfield, MO.
If money is tight, Prime or Central Refrigerated would be good choices.

I dont think central hires out of illinois, youd have to double check. But if you can get a MO address, I strongly suggest Central. and since you live in the midwest states, you can get on our midwest fleet out of training, make .41cpm, and run about 2000-2500 miles per week, makes for a 800-1000 per week pay check. Plus, we always have loads around St Louis, so you could relistically stop at home on your way thru with a load.

Plus the time out in SLC, UT is pretty awesome, I loved it out there. As for them changing your mind after training that they dont need you, they wont do that, unless you really do some damage to a truck. If you have any questions about central, feel free to ask. I finished their Training in SLC back in June, and really like it here, especially on the midwest fleet.

Would Wichita KS be in the hiring area of Central Refrigerated?

Also, didn't Central Refrigerated, out of Salt Lake City Utah, just recently get bought out by Swift Transportation, out of Phoenix Arizona?

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

I'm having a little problem living in Illinois. Some of the trucking schools used by companies like Prime are in Missouri and I apparently cannot go to school in Missouri and expect to obtain a class A from Illinois. It's turning into a problem for me. USA Trucking uses a school in East Peoria IL and that's only 2.5 hours away. I have heard good things about Prime and Central Refrigerated. I guess it never hurts to ask them if I can go to school here in Illinois and still get them to help out. But, so far with third parties like Drivers Solutions I've been told I can't.

did you notice the emphasis on USA Trucking? Either he's a recruiter or his heads in the clouds from that massive doese of sunshine injection in the butthole the recruiter gave him. OP wants to tell YOU about USA Trucking, so that you, Chinatown, will want to get on the road to success too!

Prime will get a MO CDL for you, then after training, you transfer it to an IL CDL.
Something else to consider is to use a relatives address, if you have one in a state that has no personal income taxes; there are 9 of them. Keep more of your paycheck. A map of the 9 states on Google/Wikipedia.
