I doubt Carolina Cargo gets any government incentives for hiring felons. The low pay probably is due to exorbitant insurance premiums because they hire felons and drivers with bad MVR's.
The owner of Carolina Cargo is an ex-con from the federal system, unless I've been misinformed. Seems to me like he's paying it forward by helping those that have been in similar situation.
PI&I Motor Express is another that actually recruits ex-cons. There was a newspaper article about it a couple of years ago.

Bad MVR yes but I have never had an insurance company ask if I was a felon including a new commercial policy i just got last Friday. I'm still confident Carolina Cargo is takeing full aadvantage of there employees past misfortunes. @Wooly Rhino might also have more insight whether insurance is affected

I don't see a single post complaining about him ruining it for everyone, causing low rates etc.
It's always immigrants. How can I an immigrant get a raise from my 50 CPM + accesorials (1099) when there are Americans running for 10 CPM???
I was just going to ask for more money but sure #### I am not going to get a penny if my employer can hire 4 Americans for what I am running for!
And on top of it OP is saying that it's not that bad!
Oh and I was just going to start a thread about how come we so called PROFESSIONAL OTR drivers unlike much despised here "burger flippers" don't get paid overtime (it should be CPM x 150% after 8 h of driving/on duty IMO) but whatever,it will never happen.
    Disclaimer:
This post is not directed at OP (even though he works for nothing what allows CC to underbid everyone else) but at your hypocrisy.

Op said he has a son. Whether his salary makes the bargaining position of some other driver stronger or not should be #### near last on his list of worries.

The earning potential of a convicted felon is extremely low. They run probably 6500+ miles a week at CC. There was a thread on here a while back that gave an overview of a dudes time with Carolina, and he was making like 700-800 a week. He left after a couple of months and made like 65k that year. Carolina Cargo isn't the end game here, it's a way into the industry.

And no one is ragging on the OP or his wanting to drive a truck. I, personally, think what he is doing to better his and his son's lives is great.

That being said, Carolina Cargo is a disgrace. They are exploiting a persons past for their gain. TransAm pays a relatively fair wage. Theyll hire people with a past. 20c a mile to a truck running 6k+, do you know how much the company is making off that?

We sit on our ### for the vast majority of our lives. Let's try to keep things in perspective. Our job isn't difficult.

We are in one of the most scrutinized and regulated fields in the job industry. Our job can be one of the most testing and extremely stressful. One mistake can lead to years in prison and living with killing someone.

To say our job should be equated with minimum wage, shows that you do not fully understand the consequences and risks associated with trucking.

    Wow im truly baffled

It is a stressful, high risk, long hours job for which we are not being compensated accordingly.

Agree 100%!We not only risk tickets, jail, lawsuits, killing someone but also being killed at work.
I wasn't really aware of all that risk untill I had an accident and got sued.
