How does opening up both carrier and brokerage authority work? Is it two different process's since they have to be different entities? What about insurance? Will I have to get insurance for both brokerage and carrier company? I know to open carrier authority you must have insurance but it is not required to have insurance as a broker except the bond (but most customers require cargo and liability).

The truck carries insurance. To which a copy is sent to the broker who keeps it on file till it expires. Then requests for new current. If the shipper is a direct customer to the truck. They get a copy of truck insurance. I don't think shipper requests from broker. They trust the broker to know truck is insured. Brokers won't give out loads unless they have insurance from trucks. I don't think shipper wants mounds of insurance copies from trucks they may or may never see again. And certainly don't want to deal with the organization hassle of cleaning out expired insurance copies. I think the gooberment also keeps a copy. And will suspend your authority should you let it lapse. The first scale you hit will shut you down.

Don't know about the broker side of things.

I have no idea what your situation is. And what's going.

I pulled flatbed for 7 years. The only places i've had ask for my paperwork were copper pits. 1 wanted registration as they don't allow trailers over 10 years. The rest wanted truck and trailer numbers with license plate numbers so forklifts knew who to look for.

Only time my insurance was asked for was the scales and cops.

But i'm just a driver and that's been my experience where insurance is concerned. . Not a broker or owner.

Because brokers, lile everyone, lie. Either they have been burned by a less than honest broker or are worried they might be.

I don't know the answer about opening both? ... but I heard 100% for sure keep a brokerage and a carrier separate in all ways. Address, phone numbers, accounts, etc...

The only one who has ever asked me for insurance is broker, scale, officers.

    snowwy Thanks this.
