I live in NC and drive to California and back. Based on a map i just saw, it looks like with my route, every state is ok to carry with California being an exception, saying "may carry".

What exactly does "may carry" mean and how can i be sure i wouldn't get arrested or anything for carrying in California being from NC?

I did not use the word may carry, I used the word Shall Issue and May Issue, this specifically says if you apply for a license to conceal carry or just plain carry, May issue states has to give a reason not to give you one. Shall Issue states will give you a license provided you do the training, classroom and fees etc.

This first link is National for USCCA of whom I am a member. Your scenario about taking a trip from NC to CA revealed..

    First national map

Then for travel purpose to CA from NC, NC selected in Yellow. States in Red, such as CA etc BAN CARRY from NC. You will get arrested. If I tried to carry into Maryland on just my AR License I will also be arrested. If I had a Maryland Non resident permit, then yes that is a defense to arrest.

In your NC traveler case with a gun, CA is not legal.

Some states do not just sit and say no guns. They carefully draw up lists of particular guns that are very close to our Miltiary Issue and ban those as well. I carry a Railgun and it's really close to the old MARSOC Railgun as researched and evaluated many years ago. I think the FN Model 45 is the one that is Joint Standard today, there is two for sale in our local shop complete with a silencer attachment (Which itself is a specific Class III tax stamp item here in the USA, In this state in particular. Even now I am shaky on legality of silencer on handguns. It's literally federal charges if you make a mistake or screw this up)

The United States Senate has periodocially from time to time attempted a absolute National Carry Licensing since 2006. It was defeated one night by AR Senator Mr Pryor when he was the last hold out for yea or nay and said nay on orders of his boss killing it for that year. If it has succeeded anyone who held a Weapons license to carry would automatically be a National Carry anywhere in the USA just like you drive a car on a license anywhere. Some of our states really had a cow with that. Seriously not happy with it. Efforts are ongoing through and besides the focus of this thread. National Carry will solve one problem of truck carry very much. Gun+License+ national carry = freedom. End of discussion. Next problem please or am I free to go Officer?

California does not recognize any other states concealed carry permits.
No other states will recognize California’s permit.

California has some nonsensical laws. They’ve been jacked around due to the legal challenges. Bottom line, while driving, keep any firearms unloaded and in a LOCKED storage container, not in direct view or reach of driver. You should not have any problems.
Should you be stoped by LEO, and the off chance they ask, answer truthfully, otherwise, no ask, no tell.

    It's not just California.

Arkansas does not allow weapons in a vehicle in a concealed manner without a CHCL. If you are going to the range, it goes into the trunk. Just like it is in it's range bag etc.

50 different states 50 different ways of doing things, that will either... Arrest, ticket, fines, warning, stern talking to and so on. You can carry a sword on your back in it's scabbard if you like but you will not get one blessed foot against the schoolyard fence with it. I can gaurantee that. If not me it will be the local Law and in some cases hired combat vets with SCAR's battlerifles that will ensure the potential shooter is not going to do anything bad.

In fact there is a flat federal ban rule of all guns within 1000 feet of a school. If you pulled into say the Lombardi Rest area you are within 1000 feet of two schools I think in Jersey. My defense is my concealed license. Even though we are now a open carry state. No one is stupid enough to be doing that near a school.

We have had some gun crimes up this year. Some killings too. A gang smashed a drug store and grabbed thousands of oxycodone. But two never made it back out, were captured by two local cops and two marshals among other resources that started responding directly to that town to hunt the other two who now tried to get away.

They briefly hid in a hud housing until they saw cameras and sound, took off. (This is around 2 am give or take) and were corralled in a ever smaller perimeter with 8 counties worth of Law, K9's from 4 counties including 39th Division Infantry Assets in support. (Not law enforcement, just support by being there...) The last two were captured 2 Pm, 12 hours later shivering in the wind and cold as they had been in that swamp for 9+ hours. There was no place for them to go.

Turns out this was a Houston based gang hitting tiny town pharmacies for 10 years in specifically eastern Arkansas. They thought to hit these small town hee haws and get it all. A pint of codinene becomes a 6 to 10K asset, Oxy pills go as much as 100 each, the old formula oxycontin runs 200 each for a 30 Mg pill. (That medicine has been reformulated twice now... and is the root cause of abuse.)

It's gotten to where there is sufficient medicine control by the statsi I mean the state and everyone involved in the medial side that people in general are abandoning legal pain medicine and are going to either Medical Pot, moving to pot states and be done with this war on drugs stuff or literally going to say Portland to get Herion and some state support on that. At least until the bodies start to crumble from lack of upkeep and medical care as it should in that weather up there.

It's been a very strong war, a armed war by the bad guys and I like to think that there has been no trouble on my end about 10 years now since I started carrying under license. The local police know me and ask how I did with the Colt (I am being teased now and then because after 400 to 500 rounds in a training shoot your colt does jam from thermal expansion vs the slides on the bottom of the rails and over the chamber in the back causing a little bit of a binding slowdown in recoil which means the next shot will stovepipe and is cleared anyway. The bullet is thrown away for OAL (Overall Length) issues rather than to risk a problem. Particularly the relatively BIG 255 grain hardcast jackets in super runing at about 1350 fps from Buffalo bore on nickel cases. Those will go through 30 inches of bone says the manual. I'll believe it when I see it. Most colts Ive seen except the long colts which I don't fire bounce off. I might switch to long colt or .460 rowland but right now I don't feel the need.
