You can be sure a 05 didn't come from the factory with a 6NZ so the VIN won't be helpful. The only way to be sure is to go look at the truck there should be a tag on the block on the passenger side near the flywheel housing, and a tag on the valve cover on the driver's side. Since you're not familiar with Cat it might be helpful to take someone with you who knows what to look for.

6nz haven't been produced new from factory since 03. MBN (also a single turbo, but smaller) came out between 03-04, then acert twin turbo came out. They were good, depends how you handle/tune it but not sdp with $8k worth of huge dpf.
-
Maybe they did a single turbo 6nz head on an Acert maybe? Did I read somewhere that was possible?
-
Op, when guys refer to Cat stuff by using terms like 6NZ, 7CZ, MBN, BXS, etc they are refering to the prefix. All Cat engines and equipment are classified by their prefix and arrangement numbers. The prefix is the first 3 digits/letters of the last 8 of the serial number (like stated above: 6NZxxxxx as an example).

Look for cam sensor behind air compressor. It will be on the back side of the front cover. If it is it is more than likely a 6nz or a BXS. The BXS was a twin turbo and produced in 2005 and very easy to swap to 6nz and probably what that is. I wouldn't be afraid of it either way. 54k I would be afraid but not of the engine. I have seen mechanical engines in 80 model trucks for sale listed as 6nz before, some people just think cat and it's a 6nz. Be warned if it is not a glider and you buy it converted to a single turbo you may have trouble trading it in when the time comes, so if you want it bad enough make that a bargaining tool.
rollin coal Thanks this. -
So it is possible that it's a ACERT that was changed into the 6NZ motor? That's possible? So would that be legal? Is that comparable to when I changed my isx by deleting all the BS emissions of of it? I just want a pre emissions truck that's not illegal.
-
Hard to say. Conversion of an Acert to 6NZ specs could be a possibility. Someone could have even blown the original engine and put a 6NZ in its place.
-
Yes all Acerts can run a 6nz ecm. All possible and all illegal to the EPA.
Bean Jr. and rollin coal Thank this. -
O5, either a bxs or mxs acert. Maybe a few mbn ' s were installed at end of 04 in titled 05, s but I doubt it. Bxs uses a 70 pin ecm, but not the same circuit board as in the mbn, 6nz, and 2ws engines. They use a different 70 pin ecm look the same but are not. The mxs uses a 120 pin ecm. If it truly is a 6nz someone dropped it in. Or a bxs was converted. The blocks are the same from a 6nz to a nxs. It is the internal bottom assembly that is different. Dont be scared of it. But make dang sure of the history of the engine.
-
A bxs 70 pin engine can be swapped out and put a 6nz, c16, 3406e 2ws or 1mm. Since it shares the same 70 pin harness type back from 1999 to 05 bxs.
