They are better than c-13. Better lifespan, less problems, easier to work, and better mpg. If I had trucks for local runs, I would take c-12 for gliders.

kinda weak but will get the job done

sdrockhauler. I have a 1999 Pete with a Cat C12, 13 speed and 3.70 rears. Engine is set at 400 factory settings. It is a truck and transfer set up. Usually gross around 84k. I did some reading about the engine when I first got the truck. It likes to run at about 1500 on the flats, and I take it to about 1700 to 1800 on a steep hill if it is a hard pull. It pulls very well around 1500 to 1600 with the bottom about 1400. I wanted to try to get a little more out of this engine, so I bought the Power Harness from Diesel freak. I got the adjustable one, and installed it with shrink wrap butt connectors and wire loomed it to the dash and installed the knob. I was skeptical at first, but for this particular engine, it really helped pep it up a bit.
How it works is one harness tells the truck the fuel is always warm. The other sender tells the engine the boost is higher than it is, thus tricking the computer to adjust the timing and throttle response telling the computer to let you have more power. If I am empty I run it about 4, and loaded about 7. You can make them yourself, and there are instructions on the internet. I was lazy and bought mine from Diesel Freak and glad I did. They do a really nice job on them, and I was happy with the service. Answered my questions, and told me if I did not like it, he would give me my money back.
These engines only seem to of had a couple of problems which seem to of been addressed with the major ones being cam followers. For what I do, I really like the engine. It is pretty trouble free, easy to work on as I do my own repairs in house. I put this engine right up there for dependability along with the N14. I am a long time trucker, and started on Big Cam 400 and Cat 3406A and B's. I really like the electronics on these engines, but shy away from EGR and DPF because of all the problems. EGR valve coolers leaking and so on. For a Cat and being a 12 liter the jake works pretty well.
Hope this helps answer some questions. -
I have one with 2.4M Km's on it (1.5M miles) and its never been apart. I was told by a cat shop that did the last valve set that the cam was shot and they wanted $15K to re n re it. Is it the cam followers or the cam that goes on these? Mine is set at 430 HP n what a great lil engine, I would love to have a fleet of these!!
