Hello guys, I am an O/O with a 2001 Freightliner century with a Cat c12 on it. About 6 months ago I started having problems when starting my engine: I turn it on, it turns on, check engine light comes on and dies. I do this for about 5 or 6 times and it starts and once it starts I don't have any problems at all the truck runs all day. (Sometimes it starts at the first try sometimes 2,3,4,5 there is really no exact number)
I already checked my batteries and replaced a battery cable that was damaged, I replaced fuel lines, replaced filters.
Does anybody have any advice on what can be causing this problem? Thanks in advance!
CAT C12 takes 5 to 10 tries to start engine

If check engine liht comes on, pull the codes and reort back. Use the cruise switch to pull codes.
Does it have the primer installed on the seconary housing. Thats the fuel filter mounted to the fuel rail. If it does not, i recommend intalling one. Those block off plates are junk from factory. The prime pump has check vales in it and prevents this issue. Even after you work the air ou of the system, the isue stll happens. -
check your hpop

Correction: check engine light does not come on; it is the engine protection that turns on an immediately shuts the engine off.. I have not done anything to the truck since it hadn't gave me much trouble (3,4 starts before it turns on and it runs all day) until today it took about 30 tries (literally) so I will need to get that checked out ASAP this weekend when I head home. Thank you very much for the tips!Magoo1968 Thanks this. -
If yes change your fuel filters and check the o rings coming out. A cut in one will indicate where air is getting in the system. The other spot is check valves, those fail which allows bthe fuel to leave the fuel rail.Don379 Thanks this. -
I was experiencing inability to start Cummins ISX. It randomly choked, after a few seconds of initial start. Once it choked, then I could not start it until after many additional attempts to the point of getting ready to call a tow, and also spraying the air filter with the starting fluid - horrible practice BTW. Finally, I decided to rely on my intuition and replaced both the primer pump and the mechanical pump and it resolved the issue. Maybe I got lucky with the resolution because it could have been an electrical fault too.
