Hi guys, I have a 2000 International with the Cat C15 6nz engine, last week there was a knocking coming from the rear of the engine and by the time I could get pulled over the engine locked up, I had a shop take it apart and found a broken piston, broken off valve heads on the back hole, they want to do a Platinum kit on it, money is tight right now and I was wondering if I could get away with just a new piston, liner, head, and all new bearings in it, there is only 600,000 miles on it and has ran excellent until now. They cant seem to give me a reason why this has happened, what do you guys think? Thanks

The lesser kits are a little cheaper... I'd never do one hole (especially paying for labor).

Not sure where you are but Watrin in Terre Haute did my inframe on a C13 for $13k which was a little less than half what CAT in Champaign, IL wanted for a platinum. Of course it's like comparing apples and coconuts. But it was in my budget and got me moving again.

I agree with sdp. I would never just do one hole. Bite the bullet and do them all. If cat parts are too much for you get some jobber parts to do it but with cat parts the warranty they give is well worth The extra money.

Yes, dropped a valve and it hit the piston. Pieces of that broken valve and piston took out more valves.

I would not do 1 hole. At minimum, I'd do a gold kit with a reman head. But once you start checking all the parts, you might find that a platinum kit is close or even cheaper. You'll need at least 1 injector, but did any debris go through the fuel system and a 2nd or third injector is in your future? How's the turbo and oil cooler? Debris tends to travel farther than you think. Everything needs to be checked out very closely.

I know money is tight, but can you really afford to do it again? Do it right and take good care of it, that's the best chance at recouping your loses.
