I post this in the mechanical section also,.. so forgive me if you read this already.

    05 Columbia with 04 BXS C15 ACCERT

Long story short, I just had a new water pump put on by a mom n pop shop in Grantsville Md.

They tell me its fixed,.. I go in the shop and see my truck running,.. but its smoking like a chimney. Looks like bluish white smoke. I smell antifreeze,.. but I can not locate any leaks.

Mechanic said they always smoke like that after a new waterpump. I'm scratching my head trying to understand how a water pump can effect my exhaust. I'm thinking something went into my EGR or he didnt seal something off and the EGR is sucking coolant.

Stopped for the night,.. checked coolant level this morning,.. lost 3 gallons from Cumberland Md to Middleton CT.

The exhaust smoke stops (Mostly) after I run the truck and it gets up to operating temp,.. 180 - 200f. But once I stop and it idles down to about 150 - 175f.. the smoking starts again. Its really embarrassing. This truck has never smoked.

What could be the problem here? Am I right thinking he screwed up my EGR?

    Thanks,

    Hurst

Isnt the water pump gear driven? The seal between the water and oil could be bad.

Its gear driven,.. dont want to think a shop could be that ignorant.

Going to look at checking for head gasket/cracked head tomorrow. Thats my worst fear at the moment. If I can rule the head out of the equation,.. I'll sleep better.

    Why was the pump replaced...
Bad bearings, seal leaking, engine running hot? His comment says he is full of it.

No egr. Sounds like head gasket /cracked head. However I have replaced the pre cooler, this has to be removed to replace the water pump. It is thepart that the intake air goes through between the turbo and air to air. It would be easiest to check just remove the boost hose.

ok water pump wont dump antifreeze into the oil that is why they have a weep hole. an a-cert precooler can. if they dropped it they could of cracked the element inside. or it was about to leak and draining the antifreeze out dislodged what ever corrosion was in there causing a leak. pull off the elbow for the air tube and look in there with a light. if it looks like a white crust is on the element that is your leak. i would say this is the problem since it was messed with. if not then start thinking about headgasket. or liner erosion or liner o-ring or cracked head.

Yeah I was already schooled on that. I thought the pre-cooler was an EGR. Doh.

Anyway,.. head gasket/cracked head is ruled out. Oil was clean, pressure test showed nothing.

Going to pull apart the pre-cooler. It was suggested that because it needs to be handled when removing the water pump,.. it was probably enough to cause it to leak. Its something I can do here.

The water pump was replaced because it was leaking out of the weep hole. It was the original CAT water pump with 1.2 million miles on it. I felt it would be a good idea replace it rather than wait until it left me on the side of the road.

Hurst, absolute worst case is it's a head. And a head is not all that bad to change. it's actually easier than putting heads on a Ford 302. And with your mustang love affair I'm sure you have had enough v8's apart. If you don't have a way to lift it, you can get a local to truck to pick it up with the boom for probably 50 bucks.
