I am looking at a truck with a bad 2WS 3406. What other motors will swap in ecm wise? C15? 5EK?
Does anybody know of a good California source to rebuild the 2WS? The block surface is bad, it won't hold head gaskets, so it's gotta be an out-of-frame.
Thanks for the help.

A 2WS is a has a 70 pin ecm. A 5EK has a 40 pin ecm. If you wanna easy swap you need a 70 pin ecm engine, if not you are gonna have to change some wiring harnesses. Also just because the block deck is bad does'nt mean it has to come out of the truck to repair.. You can have the block cut and install liner shims to get the liners back up to the right height.

I have a 1995 KW W900 that was a 5EK truck. The crank broke at 1.6 million and I bought a 1999 2WS. Caterpillar sells an adpter to go from 70 pin to 40 pin ECMs. The biggest things i had to change was my dipstick on the new motor because it was a front sump. My 5EK was a rear sump. just used my old pan and moved the dipstick. I drove the truck to Cat and they set the ECM to my parameters. I also have a 94 Pete with a 5EK and plan on doing the same thing when the time comes.

C-15 and C-16 with serial numbers 6NZ, MBN, 7CZ
The 3406E 40 pin engines could be used, if you bought the wiring harness adapter from Mawk Industries to go between the cab and ECM. I wouldn't recommend this with a 2000 model year or newer truck. The reason is the 3406E 40 pin ECM will not communicate on J1939 Powertrain Data Link. You need this communication protocol for newer trucks for the engine ECM to talk to the trucks ABS system.
You could also use a C15 Acert engine with serial numbers BXS/MXS/NXS if you wanted too.Cat sdp Thanks this. -
