Will cost more than the truck is likely worth. Anything can be done if you're willing to spend the $$$$$$$$$$$$ to do it. What you gotta do is ask if the end result will be worth it.
Either repower the Cat or look for a Cummins equipped truck. -
I've heard that all you need to do to change a Kenworth from a Cat to a Detroit is to change the engine mounts and the wiring harness. The tranny should bolt right up.
I'm not a mechanic but an engine swap to me seems pretty simple. I would think that its a cheaper route than to do an inframe. -
the transmission will bolt right up--and thats the easy part--
all engine electrical has to be changed over as well as some in the cab--
the cooling system will need adaptastion as well as exhaust and intake systems
some of those things are easy to do--others will take some figuring---
drive shaft--cant remember if we had to change it out or not--the engine might have sat in same spot
why not just put another cat in it?--would be a lot easier -
The guy that told me about it owned a salvage yard. He said what they do is get the engine out of a wrecked truck of the same model. Like get a Detroit out of a T-600 and put it in a T-600 that has a blown Cat. He told me it's easier to swap the engines than to do an in frame. Then again I have never done it or saw it done.

I guess my reason behind this is I hear that 3406e was just a ok motor and I would hate to spend money on a inframe if it would cost close to the same to motor swap it to a cummins. I guess what is your take on the 3406e?

All of the brands have their shortcomings, it depends on what you are comfy with.
Mr Haney (sp?) can hook you up and make that thing a fuel sipping cool running 600hp monster.
I think the guy at the salvage yard thinks he has a fish on and is going to kill 2 birds.
Of course he is going to tell you it is easy.....
Since you are asking I would guess that you don't have the experience or maybe the skills, the learning curve may be steep.
I would not think of doing it without the trucks parked next to each other.
Even then the electrical interface between the truck and the motor may be too big a challenge. That is where I would focus my attention prior to undertaking such a project. -
A guy here put a '99 (i think) 3406E in an '06 379 in place of a C13 that took a major dump. I think he only had to move 2 motor mounts but I think swapping brands would be a PITA. -
3406e is the best truck motor ever built? who the hell you been talking to? swapping a cat for a cummis is like divorcing Pam Anderson to marry Rosanne Bar
