You can rebuild the 3406e with all the best parts for a lot less money plus save several weeks time and a ton of headaches.
The CAT can be built into a excellent motor.

it's the same motor. e is computer controlled c is a mechanical. The c is the last version of the mechanicals and has the bigger bearings. it was the first real million mile motor.

being mechanical you could drop anything in there but the 425 3406 is a historical landmark as far as motor designs go. You won't find better. Fuel mileage will be 4 to 5 but you won't have those big payments like a new one so that makes up for alot of fuel

and that happens to be my favorite w900 model right there. the 60" bunk isn't huge but it just looks so #### cool with the old flat hood.

the bad part of buying a truck with a blown motor is you don't really know the condition of the trans and rear ends either since you can't drive it.

How much they want for the truck?

I have been looking everywhere at different kinds of trucks and there is only 2 I have came across that seemed worth the money this and 2000 379 pete with a cummins. i kinda like the idea of this one and having it inframed so I know the motor is fresh.

I doubt you will get it that cheap. MABEY $7k if they really want it gone. but i'm thiking they want to see $8k out of it. It looks clean but it's hard to tell. they polish it up to make it look more appealing.

does it run at all? there isn't a rod sticking out the side of the block is there? lol if there is block damage you go from inframe to out of frame crate motor

You can actually buy a reman 3406 crate motor for between $8k and $14k and swap them out. price depends on the work done. Some will rebuild the motor but reuse the fuel pump etc. some rebuild everything. If I remember right a 3406 mechanical fuel pump runs around $5k lol

Personally I would much rather buy one that needed an overhaul rather than one that already had it done. Too many guys cut corners like put bearings in it and call it an "overhaul". Bought a C12 that had been overhauled and it needed a cam a few months after we got it.

Don't be scared of the Cat. Chances are all the bad stuff you've been told was from guys that have NEVER owned one.
