Does anyone know if CAT offers a severe service or heavy haul piston ring for the C 16, like the one that's available for the C 15? Thanks in advance for any help.

Never knew they had these for c-15, what's the difference between the two? Learned something new today about the c-15.

From what I've read on here, they are made a harder material to withstand higher cyl. temps & higher combustion pressures of severe service use. If you do a search DDS has used these in an engine he put together.

Ok. Thanks for the valuable info. I'll look that up and maybe see if I can find anything out their for a c-16. DDS know anything about them if they have them for c-16? If he doesn't maybe Mr. Haney might know something about these.

Dont remember where i got these from but some notes i saved on Cat stuff(I have a lot of notes saved). Look up the numbers to verify!:biggrin_25514:

    Stock top ring 237-0194
    Heavy Haul top ring 247-6130
An improved top piston ring has been released for engines that are used in high load applications. The improved top piston ring is made from stronger materials. The stronger materials have a proven robustness in order to withstand fatigue due to high load applications. For only the high load applications that are listed below, replace the 237-0194 Top Piston Ring with the 247-6130 Top Piston Ring on the piston prior to assembly in order to provide increased life. High load applications include coal and logging applications. High load applications also include any application with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that is equal to or greater than 63500 kg (140000 lb).
This is a cylinder pack now offered with the updated ring installed....or you have to buy the ring and install yourself.

    3406E (S/N: 2WS1-UP)
    C-15 (S/N: 6NZ1-UP; 9NZ1-UP)

An improved cylinder pack has been released for engines that are used in high load applications that are listed above. Yeah, that's what I'm looking for. Do you know if they have those for the C 16 as well? I have my pistons ceramic coated if they have this ring available I'd really like to use it.

If you use that ring for normal light US trucking you will propably have problems with oil consumption and blowby. It's meant for engines that are used long periods at high cylinder pressures to lower ring wear. Low cylinder pressures can not push those rings with high enough force against liner.

I'm using them in my C-15. One gallon top up for 20000 mile oci. I've got around 70000 mi on them now.
    I'm 63 000 kg ( 138 600 lbs ) day in and out.

With the statement above I agree with Lenny, unless your building an all out race motor a single turbo C15 or C16 will never see enough cylinder pressure to seat these rings properly, especially if a tuned ACERT still hasn't got the job done in 70k hauling heavy. Just my 2 cents.
