Had CAT tell me the same thing about my MBN and that also the waste gate was sticking and they wanted $3200 for a new one. Was not givin the choice of a reman. Told them no way I was paying that much and I had had the turbo off just a month before to do exhaust gasket so i knew i could do the job of removing and reinstalling it myself. Took the turbo to a local private diesel engine preformance shop and they said the had a NEW Schweitzer for $1700 or they could replace my exhaust houseing. I told them to replace the houseing if the rest looked good. They charged me only $360 for the new houseing and putting it on and still is working great to date.
$360+6 hours of my time including drive time(the shop was an 2hrs away from home) or $3200 you make the call.
Cat reman turbo?

I bought my cat turbo from detroit freightliner, they have given a really good price. If your old turbo ( core ) is no good your are looking at about $ 600- 700. Try getting a core from wreckyard, you will save some money by doing this. I will go with the cat reman.

In 2004, I purchased a reman for my 3406. 14 months/67k mi. later, bearing went out, letting hot impeller get into housing. "Sorry, core is no longer acceptable, here is your replacement-$3485.00 please". I had to use the "L" word (lawyer) to bring them to their senses. The replacement I received had an oil leak, (seep), that I could never stop; sold the truck like that. Maybe I just hit two bad ones in a row?
I think that is the same # recommended to me by DDS, when he flashed my MBN to a 6NZ. IIRC, I paid around $2100, but cost was within $200 for brand new, versus Cat reman. Little over a year, 100k mi ago, no problems. -
So you're running the 478120 on a bridge C-15? I wonder if the price went down that dramatically from when you bought yours to when I bought mine in March..Either way, it seems like a deal-a brand new turbo for less than a lower quality rebuilt one. If I understand right, these turbos were made to handle more than we're throwing at them, so they should last forever.Last edited: Jul 27, 2010
