I remember keeping an eye on the Pyro. Kind of hard to give up a gear and a few hundred RPM halfway up to cool it down below 1200...
I was introduced to a underdrive or double under as they called it in a Diamond T which reduced the need to worry about giving up a gear.

Ah the good old days of my kitty cats, what I wouldn't give to have some of them engines back. I had an old 380 hp in a Pete that would pull a house off of a foundation, it was incredible for pulling. Sounded like you had thrown a bunch of bolts in the pan when it idled, but boy it smoothed right out when you put some fuel to it. Only ones back in the day that you could high idle and it wouldn't run away on you.
swaggerjacker and x1Heavy Thank this. -
Lug my 425 b down to about 900 rpm all the time. Just keep and eye on the pyro. Motor was rebuilt 9 years ago and haven't done much to it since.
I like my twin turbos but I love thatold mechanicals.swaggerjacker Thanks this. -
The only engine I've had some real time with was that old VED12 Volvo. Just pulling an empty 53' flat it was a turd. I honestly think my old worn out 92U 3406 would have no problem keeping up with it lol.

This is great. I'm enjoying these memories!
Cmon. Share those stories guys. And thanks.

Lol, I bought a new Freightliner in '84, had a nice bright yellow 400 B block in it. Them things smoked like a scraper, you put your boot into it you'd swear there was an eclipse. I'm thinkin' maybe not Cali compliant.....
noluck Thanks this. -
Back in the day that smoke told you stories. Certain smoke for certain behaviors is actually ok. I cannot remember how often I would examine the smoke of the one in front to see how he is doing on a upgrade. When he shifts before I do down because I still have a little RPM before I have to shift I knew he was heavier than me relatively speaking considering maybe time to pull out to middle and pass.noluck Thanks this. -
