Cattle trapped in overturned semi in NW Iowa

ONAWA, Iowa (AP) - A tractor-trailer rig hauling cattle has overturned along Interstate 29 in northwest Iowa, trapping the animals inside.

The accident happened Thursday morning when the truck ran into drifting snow on the interstate near the Monona and Woodbury County line and veered into the median, where it tipped on its side.

Sgt. Jay Smith of the Iowa State Patrol says the driver wasn't injured. He says poor visibility and icy roads caused by blowing snow prevented crews from towing the semi from the median.

He says there is no way to get to the cattle without placing people at risk.

Smith says it's likely many of the animals will die. He didn't know how many cattle are in the trailer
