We normally do only 9-10 ft wide loads so we've never needed a pilot car. But a broker we work with just offered me 10 consecutive daily loads at 12ft that pay very well and are hard to pass up. But since I'll be on the opposite side of the country, my dad will be doing these and English isn't his first language. He can speak and carry small conversations but he doesn't really know much slang and he's never used a CB radio in the states.

I've never done a load with a pilot car either so I'm trying to decide on whether my dad will be fine with communicating with the pilot car or if I should pass on this load. If it makes a difference, it's only a 100 mile trip and he delivered to that job site already a few times last month with legal sized loads. The road is wide open and there shouldn't be any issues. It also starts on a weekend so traffic is not much of a concern.

So can anyone tell me how complicated CB communications are during oversize loads? Is it just very basic info or what do the driver and pilot car talk about?

It is basic communication. Left lane clear, right lane clear. I have the left lane for you, I have the right lane for you, 18 wheeler coming up, pull over the load just fell off. A good pilot car doesn't waste time with jibber jabber. I have already had talks with guys because they yapped too much. I have already fired a pole car and a rear escort at the same time because they spent most of a day arguing with each other.

Awesome, thanks. Like I said, He's already done that trip to the jobsite twice and they're all big highways in the middle of nowhere so it should be fine

These two posts. Dad doesn't have to be fluent in English, he just needs to understand key words. Most of what he will hear is "18 coming up." When you're running up the 4 lane, pilot will be in the rear (in the front on a 2 lane...front car is more challenging for a pilot car). If the pilot car can't understand dad, you give instruction to both dad and the escort. Turn off the beacon lights on the trailer and have dad signal with the turn signals when he needs to switch lanes.

"Why turn off the trailer beacons, Six?"

Blinds the rear car to your turn signals. That way, the only flashing light he sees are the turns. He should be able to react faster.

You do in certain states on the 2 lane. Better do your homework before bidding.

He will also need to be able to tell the rear pilot to grab the other lane or hold a lane for a turn. does not sound long so may not need that one.

Some things he will need to tell the pilots before leaving like not using pilot slang....

    4 pack= 4 wheeler
    6 pack= 6 wheel vehicle
    4 pack with a tag= 4 wheeler with a trailer
    18 pack= semi

Depending on the state you also will probably need to add extendable mirrors to the truck.

I can't find anything about mirrors for my state. All I can find is a sign requirement.

    "REAR VISIBILITY REQUIRED."

Usually, anything about rear visibility, either on the permit or listed in the state provisions.

I think the obvious answer is just find a pilot that speaks the same language as your father, there are a lot of pilot car drivers out there....
