Im a new driver and just bought my first CB radio. Problem is, Nobody comes in clear unless im at a fuel station. Why could this be, I bought a Cobra radio for 150$ and its a nice one. Could the stock antennas be bad? Not set up right ?

Sounds like an antenna problem. You mentioned stock antennas, what sort of rig? How many antennas?

Have you tested SWR? That should be first step once you install a radio. Plenty of info in this forum on how to check then tune SWR on your antennas, your $150 Cobra should be able to perform that test.

The SWR is one way to measure how efficiently an antenna is transmitting you rradio signal. High SWR reading means that the antenna is not working correctly. This could mean that the antenna simply needs it's length adjusted (Yes this makes a difference) or that there is a problem with the antenna grounding or even with the coax leading to it. Chances are if you're having a receive problem you may have a break in the coax. This may seem hard to believe on a 2013 model but if it is routed through the door they have a tendency to break inside. Your SWR readout will help you get a better picture of what the problem may be. Your best bet is to search this forum for SWR articles and maybe try to google the term, to give you a better picture of what you're measuring. Then use the instructions with your Cobra and try to check your SWR readings. It's just a starting point but can help point you in the right direction.

    Josherd87 Thanks this.

I was thinking about getting a Better antenna and mount, and running a new cable direct to my CB. That should solve and issues

K-40 set up is worth the money, the coax is really good.and a wilson 2000.. you will only have to buy 1 setup. I'm still running a wilson 2000 I bought 10 years ago and still working great.about once a year i replace the stud that the antenna screws into and that whole fitting. and pull the stinger out and clean it. but I have only had to buy 1 antenna in 10 years. And when you really want to get the most out of that radio, read the article by Stu Olsen on coax length and vf factor of your coax. I just moved into a new truck and had to replace the coax and put my antenna on,the vf on my coax is .82 x 18 = 14'-9" and have a 0.5 swr without doing anything to the antenna.
