Driving to new hampshire this weekend in the four wheeler and figured I'd throw my extra cb in for the ride. What size fuse should I be using for an inline fuse. I'm just doing a quick easy hookup. I've hooked them before but all the ones I've done the truck was already wired.thanks

I know my little Cobra 19 IV lists it max amp draw in the back of the manual. If you still have it, AND the CB is unmodified, I would just round up that number by an amp or so. Most unmodified CB's are only going to draw a very limited amount of power...think about 1.5-2 Amps....(I'd toss a 3 or 4 amp fuse, and you should be fine IMO). If you get one of those "add a fuse" things thinggy that piggybacks onto a fuse in use, and gives you an extra, separate fuse circuit, no cutting will be needed, and you just need a good ground!! Best thing...none of those dang antiquated glass fuse holders to use, or replace!! Most auto places have them. And when done...just pull it out...or hide the wires for future use....no permanent changes or cut wires!!

IF you have it modified/turned up....you will have to guess!!! The more power it is modified for, the heavier the wire, and the bigger the fuse...many of the "big radio's" are best wired directly to the battery with a big inline fuse.
PS since it is a temporary install, be-careful with the SWR...even a few minutes of transmitting with a high SWR could damage the internals, so make sure the SWR is reasonable, even for a temporary install!
With the leaves changing up here...folks are looking at everything but the road....so I try to stay off them from Friday afternoon till late Sunday night... I've almost been run off the road a few times....every fall!!
Dang Massholes!!Ok...maybe they are all from further south!!
Then again, if it wasn't for out of stater's visiting and spending their $$, we would have a SALES TAX and an INCOME TAX!!

I assume you must have a good sense of humor to have picked such a good name!!
On the company truck, the antenna is most likely tuned to a reasonable SWR (by a previous driver or even the factory at install)...not trying to get to technical...but it is a rating of the efficiency of the Antenna (not really, but it simplifies the explanation)...if it is too hi, the radio see's an echo of sorts...and it can burn out the finals in the CB's transmitter very quickly. That having been said...you can listen all day, no issues (This explanation is not technically right, but is a good way to visualize it).
If it is a cheap radio...and you are using a temporary magnetic mount, and don't have a SWR built into the CB like many of the more $$ units, and don't want to barrow/buy one ( A tuned antenna is capable to transmitting much further, and will never hurt the CB's internals)...just limit your radio calls, and keep them short...and make sure the cable, etc are all in good shape!! Like I said before, it is a risk....but I did run a CB untuned for several years back in the 90's, no issues.....using an compact radio-shack radio, and a magnetic roof mount on a Honda civic...
If the mounting location has a clear 360 view around it...like on a roof, it is likely going to have a lower SWR to start.....and is less likely to cause an issue.Last edited: Oct 8, 2010

Ya I'm just using a general electric I believe, its nothing special at all. I'm also using a magnet mount. I'm more just toying around with it, using it how I should but wanted to see if and how it worked, it was my grandfathers radio from a while back
Oh and I have one hell of a sense of humorLast edited: Oct 9, 2010
