I think with the info you have given. The 5 mile mark is all you will get on this setup. You may get farther with a different antenna setup or geographic location. Don't add an amp until the radio is put back to stock.

Maybe you could try a different cb shop for a second opinion.

Also make sure your mic gain is turned between the 3-5 o'clock position.

How I have my cb set.
Dynamic is on high, all the way right
RF gain is on high, All the way right
Delta tune is 12 o'clock position.
And I run my talk back.
Basically the cb meter alwayd hangs out at about the 5 mark.
    S/RF is at 5
    SWR is below 1
    Cal is 1.5

Cal @ 1.5?? Swr cant be below 1..
    Cal is only for calibration..
S/rf is basically incomming signal/white noise if memory is correct..Depending on where your setting it maybe alot of white noise/interferiences but at 5 is alot..
Your knob setting are where they should be..I think you got a messed up noisey radio..

When you click your slider on cal and key up the needle can be adjusted to the cal via swr/cal knob..Slider then needs to go back up to the top....make note of of reading..Repeat it on ch 1 and 40..That tells you which way ant needs adjustments..So s/rf is just incomming noise...When slider is on swr it just shows swr..
Readings on that meter are not trustworthy anyways but its a decient guideline..
Even with a good swr it doesnt mean alot..To many put to much faith in swr meaning how well ant is set up..All it does is tell you how happy radio is..So as i said a multi meter and a analyzer needs to be had/borrowed...Radio seems based on whats been said has been raped by mr golden screwdriver...

I liked them. I did not come here to pick on wilson mag speicifally.

I had a ford Maverick and found the wilson to be directly over the dome light as in perfect as far as a hot spot location to transmit and recieve clean.

Having a radio like the Uniden with it's SWR to balance the antenna etc is really valuable. On a good night it's not hard to breaker one nine Hanover 25 miles away. ( Am a deaf man... it's amazing what's possible)

If anything why are we still futzing about with analog crap when you can digital the stuff and talk a thousand miles away on a few more watts? Or even patch into the internet IP radio base peer to peer everyone. SO it does not matter the distance anymore. Follow me?

Would I be better off trying to tune it with the swr meter on the radio?

My Uniden PC76xl has a SWR meter.

I don't have the meter in front off hand but two basic thoughts for one antenna.

If the SWR on channel 40 is higher than that on channel 1, your antenna is too long.
If the SWR on channel 1 is higher than that on channel 40, your antenna is too short.

In trucking we had two factory antennas on there. That overly complicates everything but I tried to do it one antenna at a time until the meter agrees on either one.

I'll be back as soon I find the darn thing and work on it some more. Maybe someone else will hop on here and do better than me.

I am not a big radio nut. I just use the CB in trucking and find it passible. But a SWR meter will fit you into your antenna much better than just a basic non SWR equipped radio like a cobra 19 etc.

My swr readings are the same for 1,19,40. The cb technician had to clip a half inch off the antenna .. people say it sounds good and clear. I still think it should get out farther than it does. I barley heard a guy 2 miles away on a good clear sunny day with hardly any chatter on the radio. I was a half mile north of I94

Dont callen a tech..Callem a hack....Sounds like your radio was touched by Mr Golden Screwdriver..If he hacks up radios i highly doubt he know much on antennas..
For poops n giggles, google the swr myth..Then go to k0bg.com and see what might help you there.
