hello guys. I am new here. I dont know a whole lot about CB radios but my father and family are commercial fishermen. Ok anyways I wanted to get a CB radio for my 98 GMC Seirra Z71 I was think either the Cobra 29LTDNW or 25LTDNW. For an antenna I was thinkin either a Wilson 4' or 5 Foot Fiberglass antenna or my buddy has a Trucker one steal whip. I dont know which to get. I want to get the best rang out of my CB. What one do I get? And if you know anything about PA systems/ speakers whats good? Maybe a webpage?

    Thanks Guys,

    Pat

First check with your buddy and see if he likes his radio. The Wilson antennas are very good. and im pretty sure that a pa system is illegal.

    welcome

I don't if there illegal or not, but I wanted to hook one up to my truck once and my boss wouldn't allow it. It's funny because I got the ok to hook up a 500 watt linear but I was denied for the P.A. :biggrin_25510: He probably didn't mind me talking to someone in Jamaica, but knew that if I was stuck in traffic or something I would use the P.A. to mess with people.

Hey, if you plan on talking on side band (dangerous you may wanna keep upgrading if you do...) go with the 25 but the 29 is a great radio as well... go either one and if possible, get some one to tune up the transmit and recieve. But even stock those radios are great.
ill tell you what i did on my gmc jimmy and well you can take parts, take the whole thing, or disregard it completely.

on mine i bolted 2 mirror mounts into the fenders (up near the top right behind the mirror) used about 8 washers on the top bolts to get it straight.... dont want crooked antennas. I have 2 4' wilson silver loads. and its amazing. on side band with out skip i talk normally 60 miles. on am i generally can talk 15 miles to someone with a comparable system. (other wise about 10 miles on a straight road (ive talked further through thick woods once.) the dual wilson thing is amaizing. but getting the mounts on wasnt the most fun ive ever had. 2 wilsons some good ru 59 coax cable and a good ground is a great system and talks far.

Pa systems are illegal to use WHILE on the road... legal to have installed. good thing to ive got a powerd horn on my kc light bar. But with a CB you cant use a powered speaker/horn. Upsetting i bought a stupid kids pa system with all kinds of sounds some animal house something or other, ripped out the knobs with the sounds and it puts out enough power to power a 50 watt pa speaker. Check Ebay and get a 15 watt speaker or 20 watt speaker (horn probably) mount it under the bumper on the frame) and it will be great. check ebay i got some for my buds who liked mine from there. they sound great.... but do not get a powered horn, cb's wont put out enough power.

i dont know much about it, but i do know plenty of people swear by the wilson 2k ... but have also been told its the same as the 1k so save money and get the 1k.... but then ive also been told its better... who knows.... generally steel whip is better, and im going to deff have to say it is if youve got only one antenna. The headace rack.... is that like a backrack? if so right in the center is a great place.... as high as you can.... i hope the truck works as a great ground plane... my guess is you will hear a little better in front of you... might not be noticeable though

The steel whip ones are more forgiving. I recently went in a parking garage with my lil wilson magnet whip; hit more than 20 times and is perfectly fine.

I have a Cobra 29 with the echo knob and a Cobra Power mic with a Liberty 4 foot graphite antenna on a quick clamp, set aside for future trucking. I got this one to be able to move into or out of a truck quickly if needed. In my pick-up, I have a Galaxy DX 919 with the same antenna. Both seem to work and talk fine. I can't tell the difference in quality or user friendly features. Both talk about the same.
