Obviously when you have it set on mod the needle should swing on the modulation scale to the appropriate %, however when you have it set on power and are transmitting there should be some forward swing on the meter but dont become to preoccupied with it, I have a Galaxy 99v2 and it deadkeys 12 watts and pep swing to 50 watts and the needle doesnt swing forward all that much, and the three cobra 29's I have ( nw,lx,chrome) the needle barely swings forward and they all have pep of 16 to 20 watts from a 4 watt carrier.

That's my plan, I just don't know when I'll get that way again. I'm on just south of Lima OH right now, then headed back down just south of ATL tomorrow. It's a good radio, I'm glad I got it, just need to dial it in a little. The meter thing just irritates me, one of those little inconsequential things that offends my sensibilities for no good reason. I like things to be accurate, or there's no point in having them. I'm inclined to believe the meter just needs calibrated, as I'm still getting (unsolicited) good reports on the sound. I have noticed I get more baseline noise every time I go over a bridge, which I find odd. For the most part it seems to have a pretty quiet floor, at least compared to the radios I've had in the past.
Oh, and yes, I switched the rocker to Mod when checking modulation.

There have been threads on different forums about static in the radio being caused by the steer tires or front hubs, and the static level will change with different road surfaces, so what may be happening is that you are driving on asphalt and then the bridges and overpasses are concrete so that increases the static until you get back to asphalt. The static will dissapear when you brake or when the surface is wet.

This is exactly what I've noticed, and now that you mention it, it did stop in the rain yesterday. It's not bad, or even annoying, I just found it odd.

Me personally I'd have a shop/tech set your swrs with hopefully a RIG EXPERT AT THE LEAST A MFJ... I don't trust anything calibration wise a cb radio shows me...your radio numbers deadkey watts modulation sound off to me... I'd have a good tech like Robert set that biscuit and be done with it. I agree with wolverine on that get it to Robert at Clays if at all possible.

One thread even went so far as to adding graphite powder to the hub oil as a way to eliminate it or run ground straps from truck that drag on road, that may be why you see some trucks with rubber straps attached to the step, but I read where they are useless unless they have metal particles in them.

The ground straps you see hanging are required for any auto going onto a pipeline construction job.

What exactly is the purpose of them hanging from the truck ? I will see some trucks with 20+ of them attached.
