I have been trucking for 15+ years now, I did it full time from midwest to the New England 'hood for a year. I was trained by an old timer who imho taught me to be a professional driver, a human being and share the road with all of humanity. (pretty deep if you realize you are driving with SOMEONE from every corner of the world!)
Anyways, one key tool IS the CB.
I always ask trucks on the side of the road if they are ok...never an answer...
I will get assistance once in a pink moon for city directions.
Never an answer on what you left behind in a cluster on incoming trucks...
And I always notify of bears behind me or brake checks, but hardy a grunt for a thank you.
Am I off base or officially an "old timer" myself??? (can't be, I just turned 21)
cb usage???

The main problem is most drivers these days don't have a CB.
-
People would rather spend their money on gps, xm & toys than a CB. Youve been trucking for 15 years & you just turned 21? sweeeet
Lonesome and passion4polishing Thank this. -
You never know when you're going to get an answer....so I always offer assistance anyways. If I see a truck that appears they might be looking for a shipper/receiver, I'll hollar at them. If no answer, no biggie, but if they do answer....at least I was able to help. These days, with roadside assistance and cell phones, and all that jazz, most guys on the side of the road probably already have it covered before we are able to hollar at them. The thing with notifying folks of bears....these days with most trucks Governed, and the guys who aren't are responsible enough to abide the speed limits....you rarely get someone really zipping along that would need to know about bears....but I hear ya.

Cell phone is the new CB.
The OP speaks of days before cell phones.
About the only thing I have used CB for in the last few years is to talk to my pilots, yard/pit traffic control, or spotting. -
His big wheel had 18 speeds and he pulled a 53' radio flyer wagon when he was 6 , so leave him be! Haha..im jk man
I use the cb and try to holler at people down or lost as well...since I do local we use it for our selves just not on 19 , but most of the time we'll be on 19 bs'in and goin along.HuskerJim Thanks this. -
Some DC's you almost have to have it to get instructions ! I would talk to people and I have had people talk me into places that I couldn't find. so yeah it's still used just not as much as before
-
most people that have cb's are basically o/o's and smaller outfits. (people that don't move out of there trucks).
only time i don't have a cb. is when i'm in a loaner truck.
when i did my training through one of them mill schools. 13 years ago. they weren't allowed to have cb's. -
