This question is two fold. One; out of the two which one is a better choice: Uniden or Cobra-Model #s if possible?
Second; which mic, antenna, or other related items etc. is a good choice for the begginers- Model #s if possible?
My thought is you always get what you pay for, this is why I do my research and buy quality.
I hope this question will help the new guys out as this site has helped me out.

i have had cobra's, i have had uniden's.....i now have yet another uniden..AND a cobra.....!!

to me, there really isn't much difference except for maybe price. i have currently a cobra 25LTD classic......to me, it's EVERY BIT as good as a cobra 29 LTD classic. it's smaller in size, so i can easily slip it into those tight over head compartments.

for antenna's i'd recommend a "Francis" as you DO NOT need to tune it. i would recommend about 9 to 10 feet of coax, extra insulated. that's about it.

then when the time comes, and you get a more "permanent ride", i'd recommend a Wilson 2000....but that, you HAVE to tune.

When tunning, can you do it yourself or have a shop do it? If you do it yourself do you need and external meter?

you can do it yourself, you'll have to buy a SWR meter. the one that is installed on a cb is ok, but a bigger one is better, around $20 or so. this way, when ever you buy a new antenna (that REQUIRES tuning), you can do it yourself, rather than to constantly pay someone. and too, you will need a short length of cb coax, about 1 foot is good

    Shiftin Thanks this.

I've got a Cobra 29LTD Classic, I had it peaked and tuned had echo put in, and changed all the leds to blue. It looks and sounds Great and there not all that exspensive.

For a mic I have an Astatic mic again sounds and looks great, but if i remember corectly it was $50

I also invested in the Cobra external speaker (great investment) I can hear my cb loud and clear over the truck.

I have posted pics of my setup in both my W/S thread and in the CB section in the "Show me your setup thread"

my 1000th post!!!! not to shabby for one year

Cobra and Uniden are as close to twins as you can get. Either one will not let you down.

Yeah, like said above you have to keep it tuned. Usually goes about every three months. The just get out of whack from bouncing around in the truck all the time. You will start to notice it not throwing out far, that's a good sign it needs a tune. A lot of truck stops have CB shops or even mobile CB shops. There are also independent ones scattered about. I think it costs roughly $20-30 to get it tuned. Really makes a big difference! Also while on the subject of different brands, if I am not mistaken I think the cobra and texas are the same radio.

As far as antennas go, how are the Wilsons? Can they be replaced with the ones that are on the rigs now, say Freight Shakers 04-09. I know that they (antennas) will have to be tuned.

So you are saying about every 3 months or so the CB itself must be taken apart and tuned by a profesional, not just tuning the antennas?
