I got my class B at 19 and went back to the school at 20 sign up for Class A course. And they said I should of just gotten my A when I was there the year before. Since they told me I could get the A before I was 21 I went straight to the dmv to take the combination permit test to get my class A permit. They said sure, mind you I'm 20 at this point. I take the test and pass and the guy starts entering it into the computer and he says ok come back on your birthday to get the permit. The test will be in the system.
Alright.... so I contacted New York State DMV. I emailed them to be specific. I asked a pretty detailed question, but all I got was a dumb answer. I specifically asked "Can you receive a CDL A license at the age of 18 with an Intrastate restriction?" This was their answer "You have to be 21." They were not specific at all. I don't want to be that annoying person, but I really need to know if NYS allows Intrastate CDL A at the age of 18 because most states do and they specify on there DMV site but NY does NOT!
I got my class A at 18. I was actually driving since I was 16 but that was a time long ago where it was a small fine to get caught without a CDL. My dad owned the trucks. I'm pretty sure you can still get class A in TN at 18 but other states like NY may be different. Like most CMV laws, the Feds have a minimum states have to abide by, and the states can add to them in lots of cases. If you can get your CDL at 18, go ahead, even if finding a job may be tough. I think everybody should hold a CDL, even if you dont plan on driving a truck for a living. It just gives you a lot more options down the road.
It's just this dumb nazi state that is holding me from getting my CDL. My father owns many trucks as well. He actually operates his own company. So the job part is all set for me. I might just have to wait until I'm 21 which is weird because I can go die for my country at 18, but I can't drive a truck to make a living for myself.
