What's the difference if you are hoping for a straight truck job?
Chieftains Thanks this. -
That straight truck may occasionally be hooked to a pup trailer(pintal hitch) thus a Class A is needed. That is a ‘truck trailer’ combination.

A straight truck is always class B unless it's towing a trailer over 10,000lbs. You do know that you drive a class b with your class a license, right?brian991219 and Badmon Thank this.

What made you get a Class A to go out and drive a box truck? Just curious. I never understood this or people getting a Class B license from the jump.
You’ll always make less across the board.
A straight truck is always a Class B unless it has a trailer attached in which case you may as well drive tractor-trailer in the first place.
I’m in Michigan too. Look for a dump truck job seems like that might be the way to go.brian991219 Thanks this. -
OP you really need to study part 383. 383.91 (d) has your answer. Take note of 383.91 (c)
(c) Relation between vehicle groups. Each driver applicant who desires to operate in a different commercial motor vehicle group from the one which his/her CDL authorizes shall be required to retake and pass all related tests, except the following:
(1) A driver who has passed the knowledge and skills tests for a combination vehicle (Group A) may operate a heavy straight vehicle (Group B) or a small vehicle (Group C), provided that he/she possesses the requisite endorsement(s); and
(2) A driver who has passed the knowledge and skills tests for a heavy straight vehicle (Group B) may operate any small vehicle (Group C), provided that he/she possesses the requisite endorsement(s).

Ok Thank you guys. I understand now that I can drive a class B with my class A. And I was thinking dump truck as well. Thank you guys.

Many class B jobs do require or prefer class A drivers. Both due to the trailer needs mentioned above and often due to insurance requirements.
Also note that a 1-ton pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer often requires a class A.
If you are paying for training, get a class Abrian991219 Thanks this.
