Actually you can keep your CDL without a medical card. You just can't drive a commercial vehicle. My dad is permanently disabled but he kept his CDL when he renewed it last year. In a few years when he renews again he will let it go because he said he will lose the drive time. My stepmother had surgery on her hips and just had to renew her medical before she returned to work. It does depend on your state but generally speaking you can keep it without a medical.
