Just graduated from cdl school (10/9/15). Have a CA permit, will be going to the CA DMV to get CA class A temp license, but they just implemented a new rule in which they now keep the hardcopy of your current license, for me that's my class c. So you only walk out of there with a temp/paper copy until your class A hardcopy arrives in the mail.
Question - will companies hire with only the temp license, considering that its not an official ID. Will they accept this temp as a form of ID for drug testing?? Just curious if any one has run into this issue. I have no other form of an "official ID", honestly never needed it, and trying to get one now will take just as long for my hardcopy class A to arrive in the mail. Thanks.

I am surprised they kept your “photo” ID and you have just a paper temp license as what your you to use when needing to show ID? I would ask the DMV what are you to use for ID?

Here in NC you keep your old hard copy ID for ID but given a paper temp to drive with. I know this as I have gone thru this 2 times in 6 months. Once when I moved and medical waiver issue.

Now I have to go check the mail box for my hard copy.

you'll be fine. normal procedure. when the time comes in a few years to renew that CDL, they keep that as well, and give you paper copy.

you can have your CDL mailed to your home, then from there, you can have someone there, FEDEX it to the company your at. which is what i did, when the switch over to the CDL took place back in 1992.

    Just a word of caution:
Some shippers may not like/take the paper license. Had Budweiser refuse to release a load to a paper license when I first started out. And a few others looked at it and called the boss type out before it was O.K.ed

CA use to just punch a hole in your DL and give you both the old hard copy and new paper temp. Then they started confiscating the hard copy. Heck now you have to take an original Birth Certificate to get a CDL. Welcome to the world of terror.

One good thing is ca. is getting licenses out really quick now, maybe a week or so. Same with registration, buy a new car,,,,,Bamm, your plates are in your mailbox in about a week.

Thanks everyone for info. Went to CA DMV, turned in permit, got temp/paper class A license, they do take hardcopy of your previous license but clerk did say that I should expect my Class A hardcopy within week or sooner, maybe this has something to do with them taking the hardcopy??
