So I'm not necessarily new, but this is my second time getting my CDL DOT physical. Virginia passed a law in 2014 that all physicals must be turned into the DMV.

So I went in to get my physical (im insured and my job involves driving a truck part time) and the woman at the desk asks how I'd like to pay. I tell her with insurance. She then tells me "We do not take insurance for the cdl physical even if its required for your job." when i asked her why she says," I cant tell you that." which pissed me off.

Thats when I pull out my old medical card and read off the name of the doctor who still works there and say, "I paid a $20 copay for (insert doctors name) to do my physical for this same reason 2 years ago. and now you want to charge me $120 and say you wont bill insurance?" I then told her to take my name off the appointment list and ill go find somewhere else.

Ive called 3 other doctors and they say the same thing but wont give me an explanation why. does anybody take insurance for a physical now-a-days?

    Dr. Richard Rodgers Thanks this.

Im a contractor at a big company. driving is probably 10% of my work. but still need CDL to cross state highway from time to time. They didnt ask about billing my employer or anything, just said they needed $75 on the spot today.

I don't know what part of Virginia you are in, but if you are in the Hampton Roads area and are a veteran, you can get this done by Dr Anita Sager at the Hampton VAMC. Dr Sager did my last DOT physical. All I paid was a very small COPAY.

unless it is your primary doctor, and he does a physical as a yearly thing and just does it up for the DOT, your insurance will pay, as "most" insurance companies allow 1 physical a year. that is what you might want to do...unless...your doctor IS NOT a DOT certified doctor, then you pay, cash, credit card....

    it's the way it is......

no sense in debating, arguing, whatever.

some places that are DOT approved, can charge (here), from $88.00 to $150.00...............

either pay it, or not..........then get your CDL down-graded, then the fun REALLY begins for you....

Last time I got a DOT physical, June 2014, my employer wouldn't pay for it through insurance either. I ended up having to fork out $100 from my pocket to do it. Weird thing is that when I first started working for that company in 2011, they paid to renew my physical in 2012 but not in 2014 - that was on me.

thing is, no one seems to think of, it is a job related expense, so save the receipts for tax time.

i not only get the DOT physical as a tax write off, but my CDL license renewal and hazmat finger-printing as well..
