If those mentioned above aren't currently hiring beginners in your area for solo driving positions (the CDL job market is actually pretty slow right now for beginners), you might try this one:

Try them all anyway. Don't take anyone's word for it.

You'll be drug tested; that's a federal requirement.
The test will be urine or hair follicle. -

If you choose this company, go with refrigerated or flatbed or conestoga/curtainside.
Dry van doesn't pay as well with any company.

This is a conestoga trailer:
Conestoga® trailers combine the flexibility and ease of loading of an open-deck flatbed trailer with the protection of a dry van trailer.

Something else to consider/think about....for each "beginner" carrier under consideration that are hiring new drivers: for repair or routine service to your assigned tractor....DURING YOUR HOMETIME -- WHICH CARRIER HAS THE CLOSEST TERMINAL TO YOUR HOME LOCATION (& thus, the shortest commute)?
Schneider's closest to you would be in Laredo, TX (approx 145 miles).
And the others....????

swift has terminals in houston, lancaster, and laredo

If you decide to pay for your own training, Del Mar has a program at their campus on Old Brownsville Rd. and there's a private school on Agnes just off NPID.
As far as carriers go, most of the dry van carriers have their terminals in Laredo. There are lots of reefer and dry van companies down in the Valley but I don't know if any of them pay for training or not; there's a list of them on the information tab of my profile. If you prefer to go tanker, Schneider has a terminal on the east side of Houston at I-10 and BW8.
Also @Jawash22 may I ask which district you retired from? My gf just left FB and is considering positions at other districts in the area, and I'd like to give her the inside scoop if you don't mind sharing. Thanks.Chinatown Thanks this.
