What tests are required to get your CDL permit? I have been doing the practice test for General Knowledge and Air brakes for the last couple days scoring 90-100% consistently am I good to go? Or should I be doing the combination vehicle test as well?

Not sure why I have to get my permit before I head to training as I read before alot of people go to training then study and get the permit while there. Anyway I was told once I have my permit I will have a date set to hit training.
Just want to be sure im going to pass with flying colors! I'm excited but not so excited about winter especially if I have to go through Wyoming.. I was there taking care of my brothers pups in July 2014 and a tornado went by and the whole downtown was covered in icewater when it was in the 70s 20minutes prior. Not a fun state!

Definitely have to take combo vehicle if you plan on pulling a trailer.

For Class A you need General Knowledge Air brakes and combination vehicles. Where are you going for training?

If you are going for class a you need combination vehicle also. I studied for mine in school, but it makes sense to get it first. It is a waste of school time for something you can learn at home. Better to have time at school to actually learn how to drive.

    Sphene25 Thanks this.

Going to Swift training, plan on doing 6months-1 year before moving on to something. I have virtually no job history so I know of no one else whos willing to hire/train me. Knight calls 2 times a day but im not really interested as I cant afford to pay my way to Phoenix then pay for a motel for 3 weeks and transportation daily right now.

To get a CDL you will need to pass the General Knowledge test. Its 50 questions. You will also need to take the Air Brakes test to get the air brakes restriction off your CDL. To drive class A vehicle you will need the Combination Vehicles test. After this any further testing will be based on the type of vehicle being driven.

I hate the DMV in every state lol.

Apparently they require a birth certificate now and a SSN card/drivers license is not sufficient. I swear everytime you go in there you get some mean old hag who hates life and no matter what documents you bring they try their best to turn you away so they dont have to do 5minutes of work on the pc.

This lady claimed the test was $13 and the permit was $40.

    http://itd.idaho.gov/dmv/driverservices/CDL.html

Shes mistaken and I told her she was wrong and I checked the website prior.

    CDL Fees

    • CDL license (4-year) $40.00
    • CDL instruction permit $29.00
    • Duplicate CDL or permit $15.00
    • License upgrade $25.00
    • Endorsement addition (after issuance of a CDL) $15.00
    • Written tests (each) $ 3.00
    • Skills test ($10 to Driver's License Office, $60 to Skills Tester)$70.00

Bumping to let anyone in Idaho know whats up.

$13 to take General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination vehicle this also covers the $10 to DLO for skills test in the future.

    $29 for the permit.

"written" tests are taken at touch screen PC's which is horrible due to how slow they are and if unsure on the answer its very anxiety inducing pause before it says correct or tells you the correct answer.

also my permit was issued 11/13/15 and is good until May.
