You need to find a reputable driving school, whether that is through a community college or a private school. That will give you exactly enough and not much more than what you need to pass a driving skills test to get your CDL. It'll also run you around $4000 or more.

Or... you can look into getting your CDL through one of the training companies - usually in exchange for driving for them for a period after getting your CDL. A year is common. Swift and Prime are a couple of them.

Most companies will not hire someone if they dont attend a school of sort, whether its theirs or someone else's. Its basically to get you some practice driving and doing pre-trips along with learning the air brake system. Some schools are way better than others as they teach more and you have more time behind the wheel. A good 160 hr (4 weeks) course is all thats needed and I believe they will give a discount as you already have a learners permit. Be prepared for having a physical and a drug test (better study for that one) and keeping your physical card updated every two years to keep your cdl valid.

MD, you have received good advice in the replies posted above.

Your "learners" or temporary permit has an Expiration Date printed on it, typically below the Issue Date.

Idaho permits expire ninety days after the issue date.

Good luck in your new career.

a option you might consider, where i live theres a couple food dist-companys that will hire on as a drivers helper & work you into driving. also not sure if they still do this but large union truck companys like roadway & cfi they would start you out on docks & work you into driving. like already stated even if you got license with no experiance no one will hire you, happy thanksgiving!!!

Thought you found a shortcut huh?

Now that its a long cut, yes you have to go through an ACCREDITED school if you want any chance of getting a driving job. Insurance companies have pretty much solidified this rule with all the major carriers.

Plus you are only short changing yourself. Your just going to wind up driving around aimlessly, not making a dime if you haven't been schooled and then properly trained.

Well you could always do what I did and just buy your owntruck and trailer and go under your own authority, although this would require a large sum of money a large amount of balls and possibly even a larger amount of arrogance. Doing this with no school means learning from the very unforgiving school of hard knocks. On second thought just go to school much easier and safer.
