Do you have to retake the multiple choice exam when getting a CDL renewal (have all endorsements, know TSA takes up to 30 days for Hazmat background check / clearance) or you just have to verify that you are who you are, residence, medical records with state dot compliance, blah blah blah - is it worth making the reservation or just pop in with all your proper documents handy to verify, pay & get issued an updated cdl (wait for Hazmat or X if tanker/hazmat, to arrive in mail once bg check approved - get temporarily cdl in meantime)... have multiple people form different states tell me no (few had regular cdl's, one had tanker endorsement)...

your state DMV site will tell you what you need to do.
tscottme and Loudstacks Thank this. -
In Texas you just renew online. However if it’s been awhile sometimes they say you have to do it in person for an updated photo. They make you look into the box for a quick eyesight and colorblind test and you’re good to go.

If you're renewing your CDL just show up to renew. You won't have to retake any of the tests (general knowledge, tanker, doubles/triples, etc).
If you want to keep HazMat, you'll have to retake the HazMat test, finger prints, and background check.Loudstacks Thanks this. -
As said by others, no test, but H or X requires that test and the entire process again.
