you cant if you have your cdl permit then the cdl holder must log on duty not driving while you are driving.

Yep, what he said.........I had a trainer once tell me she would show running teams with her trainees. I told her she better not get caught.

But what you have to remember is if the trainer jump in the seat and runs out his hours for the rest of the day when you are out of hours he still has to take a 10 hour break so when you are eligible to drive again he isn't eligible to go on duty.

CDL Holder in cab with a permit driver must be able to take control if necessary...so if you are driving, he must be on duty...if you are driving and he is out of hours, your are running illegally. Having a permit driver would only extend your driving window by three hours assuming you both go on duty at the same time. For example you drive for three hours while he is on duty...then he drives for 11. You are both out of hours after 14 hours of going on duty.
