hello everyone! I am a power lineman who just got a new job in California. I am required to have a California CDL on my first day of work (oct. 25th). I currently have a Class A CDL in the state of Wyoming and I just learned that I will have to take the written test in California in order to transfer my CDL....i have heard some people say that you must re-test on everything, including the pre trip and driving test. some people say that its just the written test.
has anyone ever dealt with a CDL transfer to California? if so, what do I have to do? (ive read the BS on the DMV website and it is unclear whether a current CDL holder has to do all testing)
Thanks guys n gals!

Yep i know for CA you must do the whole kit and kaboodle written and driving test what do they all think where dummies or something? I guess it depends on which state and what there rules are.

I transferred from Oregon.
There are forms to fill out. They'll want the license number of any CDL you held in other state(s) for--IIRC--the past 10 years.
Had to take a basic written (the test everyone takes), a written test for each of my endorsements, and a vision test (Cover one eye and read Line X on the chart. Cover other eye and do the same.) My physical card was current, but they wanted to see the original long form; no problem. Had to provide social security number and proof of current California address. They took a photo for my new California CDL, issued a temporary, and mailed the CDL within, IIRC, about three weeks. I forget what it cost--not much.
You can make an appointment to do all this at whatever DMV office you want--saves waiting in line.
No road test. No pre-trip. The worst part is standing in line if you didn't make an appointment! BOL.

yea I transfered mine about 4 years ago all written tests for endorsements no driving tests are required you also will have to take tests four wheelers have to take just not class A. definately go online and make an appt. especially anywhere in so-cal. you might also want to have a copy of your long form physical so they can copy it and add it to your mvr. some companies fail to forward it to the dmv and that can get you in trouble

CA will waive the skills portion provided your driving record is acceptable. In addition to your WY CDL, you'll need your original Soc Security card, not laminated, not a copy. You'll also need a second form of ID. Birth certificate, military DD214, divorce court judgement showing your name as one of the parties is acceptable.
Some of the DMV offices keep your long form physical, others scan it and return it to you, so you'll want an extra copy.BigHorn Ape Thanks this. -
