I live in Mich
Have a buddy that drives O/O for Landstar
Iam kicking the idea of getting a CDL and Drive
Ive Heard i can get a PERMIT and Learn from him and take my state tests and it would be cheaper???
Iam a good driver clean record 35 years old and just thinking of something NEW
He said if i did this and got my CDL no company would hire me and Ins on a Truck would be threw the roof as NO exp.
He said we could team or if i got a truck i could work for him and he'd get my freight lined up.and in a year or 2 get into Landstar myself.
Or is there NOWAY around school???????
There is a school near by and i crack up at the trucks i see on the road they are learning on these NEW DRIVERS are DANGEROUS i tell ya
Ive drove my Buddies 379Pete a few times and its not that bad even fresh in the seat But iam used to driving my dually with a 48 footer so its not like the thing is to big
Any input as to the PERMIT INFO would be great thanks

Your friend is right. Insurance is the problem.
-
I never went to a school. I got my CDL at a beer company where I started driving tandem side loaders. I've never had any job ask me where I got my license at, but they do want to know how long you've had it. That's going to be your problem with any major carrier.
Your best bet is to work for a beer company or foodservice distributor that will train you for your CDL. -
Tell him to call Landstar and see if they will allow him to train you. I know they will for a husband/wife or wife/husband but not sure if they will extend it out side the family. They were going to let me train my wife, but in the end she decided she didn't want to get a CDL.
The answer to your question is yes, it can be done. Thats how I did it. I got my CDL permit and rode with 2 friends that were independent. I'm sure their insurance company would have been less than thrilled to know what was going on, but nothing bad happened so they never knew.
Eventually once I got the experience I was able to move on to Landstar with out any problems. -
most companies will not hire someone just because they have a cdl you will need to take atleast 150hr course but some companies require more you will also need to go through the training at the company.
also if you have a cdl and have not driven for anyone in a long time that would be a problem too. -
If you are sure you have a company who will let someone train you AND get a year of experience then go for it. It's the better way to do it in my book. You will learn ALOT more than one of these schools teach you. I learned this way and I'v ever had a problem getting a job. In fact I tend to get a job pretty much anywhere I apply. But I have other areas of trucking experience also
