I took and passed all the written tests for my CDL, total time under 1hr. I know many from our class did same or very similar. I have trouble grasping the concept of anyone failing one of these test, but I know some. My wife had to take the general knowledge 4 times, the air-brakes test 3 times, the combination test 2 times, and she just failed the pre-trip for the third time. This costing a lot of time (some money, but not much to this point) and fraying my nerves.
My question is this Just how many people have a difficult time passing these tests? Am I the unusual one, or is my very slow?

These tests cannot be passed without studying. I found this site from a fellow classmate and have also seen it recommended on this site, www.cristcdl.com. It offers free practice tests that are very close to the actual tests. I hope this helps her and to answer your question is she just slow? Noway these questions are written in such a way that common sense and lucky guessing won't cut it.
p.s. you might be walking slow or dinner might be a little slow getting on the table tonite, after she reads your post. loljmcnewbie Thanks this. -
I think it helps to have some mechanical background. Pre-trips and airbrakes can be tricky if you are not familiar with motor components. Plus, there are people that have trouble with taking the normal driving test! On the hazmat test I think they do throw a few questions in there to make you think.

It is common for students to not pass all three test on their first try. This could be due to the amount of study time that they had to prepare themselves as well as the personal stress that an individual has when faced with an actual written test.
The DMV realizes this is common and will allow 3 chances to pass the test. After the 3rd try, the applicant would have to pay another testing fee, in most states.
They also realize this for the CDL field and road test.

I will admit to having a big head start. A degree in Mechanical Engineering and lots of time with a wide range of machines. We attended a good school. Plenty of study time. She has taken so many of those free practice tests on the internet and passes usually, but she just can't seem to pass the ones at the state, Texas DPS.
I do most of the cooking.
Hi, Chompi, if youare who I think you are, then we know each other. Well, we spoke on the phone once. Your wife's mother is my cousin. -
Yes! Small world isn't it! Especially once you become a truck driver. How are you guys doing? Kickin Chickin recommended some good sites on the web. Have you decided on a company yet? I forget how Sarah did on her tests, I will have to ask her. I will pm you my email. If you guys need anything don't hesitate! Have fun on this site there is a lot of good info, interesting info, and just plain funny info!

Well jmc, there are differences in people. Some folks have no problem at all taking a test, but can't perform worth a #### in the real world. Others are very good at the real world stuff, but freeze up when they take a test.
I think there are only a select few that are blessed to be good with both.
Try to be patient with your lady here. For one thing she IS your lady, and deserves that patience. And you KNOW that she can't be a dummy. After all, she married you, didn't she!jmcnewbie Thanks this. -
I hear what you are saying Big Don. I know you are right. But I don't have the patience of Job.
She actually drives pretty good. Slow learning the backing, but I saw much worse for some of these other guys. She hit fewer curbs than I did the first day on the streets. That is my weak point, right turns.
She definitely has a fear of tests. She did ace her cosmetology test 20 years ago and that one a is much harder test. Several hours and very detailed. I helped her study for that one. Talk about data I wish I could wipe from my mind!!
I love the lady, very much. But I am not very happy with her right now! -
this women has a heart of gold, shes put up with me for 25 yrs,but to get her to understand mechanical function,,just aint happeninglol
now i do feel for her, she would love to be on the road with me,but she has a hard enough time keeping a 4 wheeler on the road, iv helped her study for her medical assitant test and ill tell you right now, with the spelling and knowing what the stuff is ,there is now way shape or form i could pass any of those test ,that she got 85% and 95% grades on,,as for her helping me in trucking,,,dont think so,according to her ( that trailer thingy that gos on the back of the truck) got to love her terminoliagy,,,
come up with a way to help her understand, find something she could associate things with that she uses everyday,or word terms,,,,,,what im trying to say
happy or unhappy muster up all your pations with her, shell get it, by all means dont walk away from it,she needs to get over this herdel, and you need to be there for her,,,,,just sometimes things are harder than they look 4 others,,and backing them up and encouragement, and positiveity will help her prevail
Big Don Thanks this. -
Hey at least your lady is willing to give it a try. I took my wife on one short trip. Bobtail from Saint George, UT to Vegas, hooked a trailer and came home. She climbed out of that tractor and said, "I'll never get in one of these things again." This was not only a VERY short run, but one in which nothing out of the ordinary happened.
Just be glad your wife is willing to try it. Unless, of course, you are wanting to get rid of her!
