I haven't been hired yet in Tennessee. I was just going to go get my DOT Physical and CDL permit on my own. Then call a Trucking Company to help me with the rest. Has anyone ever done it this way? Ill still have to do the skills test but I figure a trucking company would gladly help with that portion if I already have my DOT Physical and CDL Permit in hand.

Since a CDL permit has a brief life, I suggest not doing it this way.

The problem here is....for now.....& the foreseeable future....CDL jobs for rookies are fewer & farther between -- than say, 3 years ago.
However -- here's a very rare opportunity for you to get a CDL thru a company, & also be home daily:
Coca Cola -- driver trainee -- Knoxville, TN -- no CDL req'd

Before you decide how to get a CDL you need to find the employer that knows your background, especially if there is anything in your background which is negative (poor driving record, traffic tickets, DL suspensions, felony convictions, drug use, DUI/DWI/OWI, long gaps in employment, not having a US driver license for at least 1 year, less than 23 year old applicant, etc). Each of those will severely limit which trucking companies can hire you. Some trucking companies only hire newbies from some individual CDL schools. Some trucking companies have their own CDL schools. Get your CDL however THAT ONE EMPLOYER wants for the newbies they hire. You will be drug tested and marijuana, cannabis, THC, weed, pot, etc are all Federally prohibited and any state law about it has ZERO meaning to the Feds for CDL purpose, in case that is relevant to you.
THERE IS NO TRUCK DRIVER SHORTAGE, if anything there are too many CDL drivers for the amount of freight needing to be moved. The media and the trucking company associations have been pushing a fake story "truck driver shortage" to get money from the govt, attract new technology, and change govt regulations.snowmantrucking101, nextgentrucker, TurkeyCreekJackJohnson and 1 other person Thank this. -
