I know this has been done to death but.
What is the best phones to have? I watched U-Tube vidieo where a female trucker described using a smart phone as somthing you needed.
If you get in a wreck, you can document it with photos. Record all messages text and voice on it. Also never get out of range with somthing like the Sprint service.
What would be the best brand names to get with what features?![]()
Cell phone or Smart phone?

My personal opinion is that smartphone technology contains an array of features that are far too compelling for most drivers NOT to have in the modern era. Internet, text, GPS, maps, camera, movies/TV, weather apps, load apps, tracking apps, emergency and nearby services searches.
Some things simply enhance your quality of life, but others may save your life if, God forbid, needed.
I sympathize with those who will say that they aren't "tech savvy" enough to deal with all of the "complex" workings of a smartphone - I really do. But if I am answering the question posed in your post, I just think that your enjoyment, safety, and job efficiency is worth infinitely more than the extra $30 for a data plan.
Just my opinion... -
Save money....go with a smart phone.
AT&T will be requiring "smart phone and data plans" in the near future. -
When I first started out I had an old Nokia cell phone that did nothing but make calls. Thought I didn't need a smart phone because I don't use all the stuff on it. Went out with my trainer and he had one. Showed me all the apps he uses as a driver. I bought one before I was off his truck. Do you need one? No. However, there are lots of useful apps out there that make your life on the road so much better. Plus while waiting at the docks you can play some cool games most of the for free.

As far as simplicity goes, get an iPhone. I'd recommend the 4s over the cheaper 4 simply because you can text by voice with Siri over your Bluetooth headset. If you're not a tech savvy person, it's the easiest to use for sure. I had my wife and mother in law get the iPhone, and my Apple-hating self got one as well, later, do to it's size.
I believe Android is a better tech operating system, and my tablet is Android, but all of the decent phones are HUGE!!! Both systems have more free apps than you'll ever need. Apple really does develop their products so that the lowest common denominator can use it, but sometimes that's not a bad thing. -
I "loved" my droid. But moved to the 4s when my wife requested one. I'm tech support for her.
Smaller phone not an issue (until the 5 comes out) simpler apps. LOTS of FREE apps that help a driver along the way.
And "THE TANK" phone protector....is assume. Worth every penny for us clutz's.
Siri hates people with a southern accent. Upgrade to DragonSpeak....free. -
I have a Droid, I love this phone, I can use the maps to google earth truck stops to see if there is allot of parking or what kind of parking (small and sheety or big easy spots for real trucks (hoods). I use it to SEE my shippers and receivers BEFORE i get there so i know how to approach and exactly where it is. I can google addresses and phone numbers, take pictures and videos, search the web, play on the forum, etc. I will NEVER truck without a smart phone again!
