I repower is when you swap a load with another driver.
Normally this will happen when one driver is short on hours to deliver a load, so the other driver will take their load and deliver it for them. Leaving them with either a load that has a later delivery time/ date or an empty trailer.
It is also used at times to get drivers to places they need to be. Lets say I am due to get home, but the only load in the area where I am is not going anywhere near home.
I can get the load and move it to a better lane, then meet another driver and swap loads for a load going where I need to go.
Also many drivers like to average out miles. When you swap out or drop a load then it is considered delivered on your pay. So you will get paid the miles you ran up to that day.
Lets say that the pay period ends on Sunday, but you have this 2000 mi load that does not deliver till Monday. You can run some miles off of it and swap before midnight with another driver. This way you will each be paid for the miles you ran before midnight on the next pay. And maximize your pay week.
Drivers can request repowers at times, but normally it only happens when it is to the benefit of the company. Or one of the drivers in the swap are low on hours.
You may get more miles doing this or less. Depends on the load.
As for advice...

Allot of information is on this forum. The more you learn the less you will be surprised when you get to school, orientation, and on your own.

Haven't posted for several days so here's my update. Finished all testing on Friday. If you really want to be here and pay really good attention, tests are a piece of cake. If you don't, you could fail out. Starting orientation tomorrow and then hopefully out with a trainer on Wed, Thurs. or Fri. Can't wait to get through the next few days, I feel like we got off of that Greyhound 2 months ago not 2 weeks ago. I'm anxious about getting out with the trainer, hopefully a good one. If you are coming to SLC, be prepared to soak up a ton of information in a very short time frame. If you get it, you get it, if not, they don't care, there are 50 more people arriving next Sunday. When your here, hanging out at terminal 2, remember that truckers stories are like fishing stories, you can't believe half the crap you hear. Everyone at Central have really been nice and professional, I have no complaints.

If I wanted to be an owner operator I would find a good truck several years old for a good price. The ones 4 years old or less are much more expensive than one 5-8 years old. And you can find some very good well maintained trucks that are up a little on years, but still in the 600,000 mile range.
Then find a good company to lease on with that truck.
The better company's for owner Op's do not have a strict age limit on trucks. They are more concerned with the quality of the truck.
The large trucks will all that extra stuff are neat, but heavy. It limits you as to what you can haul.
Most people that own those are bed buggers or into moving trade shows. They do not have to haul much weight then.leatherman and The Challenger Thank this. -

there are two options for cell/computer connections and yes verizon has the best coverage i work for them until i get hired at central.. a dedicated card or usb device is nice if you dont want to tie up your cell.. you can use your cell as a 'thetered device' for an extra charge of either 30. or 60. dollars .. i have a blackberry and pay 30 for unlimited emial and data connection and it it good for general internet but i like a biger screen especially when looking at maps.. i recnetly planed a trip to and from alabama and did googl maps every night ... the problem is you cant use your phone to talk and browse at the same time. you can discontinue the 'thered option' any time you wnat with no contract fees if you use a dedicated card usb device its is its own line of servcie and is 60 use it or not one way around the dedicated line option is to pay full retail or get one off of ebay or something like that then there is no contract term fees
